Cobh and Ploermel
Councillor Sinead Sheppard presented an original Charter of the twinning between
Cobh and Ploermel to the committee on their departure to Brittany. President: Shir-
ley Walkin, Secretary: Siun Mac Coitir, Treasurer: Ken O Galligan, who have worked
tirelessly over the past two years. This was signed in 1984 by the late Councillor Mr
Liam Duggan and Mr Paul Anslin who still resides in Ploermel.
Also, presented by the Council was a framed certificate congratulating both towns
on the 35th anniversary. Cobh was on route to be welcomed by our host families in
France.
President of the Cobh association ( Mrs Shirley Walkin) was pleased to accept this
on behalf of all involved. She acknowledged that this was a testament of the com-
mitment on both sides to continue this well established link and emphasised that
fundamentally what links us is based on core values of friendship.
Cobh was welcomed warmly and were wined and dined at the local town hall. It
was indeed, a wonderful evening amongst old and new friends.
It was a week packed with cultural activities. They had the opportunity to visit the
Citadelle at Port Louis which is steeped in history and was enjoyed by all. Another
excursion took the group to the historical centre of Rennes with its meandering
little streets and wonderful facades of original buildings. That same day a tour of
the Parliament with its wonderful architecture was truly breathtaking. The story of
Anne of Bretagne and Napoleon 111 is well researching for those with an historical
interest.
