           Portugal's advantage is its isolation,
            which has kept its inheritance of
          indigenous varieties intact and largely
           unaffected by international varietals
          and styles. It also has an extraordinary
            range of climates - rainfall varies
           enormously; the Vinho Verde region
          in the far northwest, famous for light,
          dry whites, is one of the wine world's                                            MADEIRA
          wettest, while the Douro Valley to its
            immediate south east is one of the
            driest during the crucial growing
          season. The island of Madeira is sub-
            tropical, characterized by hot and
           humid summers and mild winters.
