YOLO COUNTY
Directly east of Napa Valley across the Vaca Mountain Range lies Yolo County. The first vineyards
were planted here in the 1850s. Yolo has 4 sub appellations within it– the Capay Valley and Dunni-
gan Hills AVAs are in the north-western corner, while the Clarksburg and Merritt Island AVAs are
along the edge of the Sacramento River, which forms the eastern border of the county. Dunnigan
Hills dry loamy soils offer excellent drainage, leading to lower yields of grapes with an excellent
concentration of flavor. The region offers excellent value to customers with discerning palates and
tight wallets.
