The Cecily Faith Statham Scholarship
A new scholarship, established by family members Virginia Casey,
Nigel Statham and Richard Statham in honour of alumna Dr
Cecily Faith Statham, will provide opportunity for indigenous
and rural students to pursue the study of medicine at Janet Clarke
Hall. The scholarship recognises the importance of the College
to Cecily, a pioneer for women in medicine, born on 6 October
1920. Coming up to the University to study Arts, she lived in
residence for eight years from 1938 as she completed degrees in
Arts and then Medicine. She was Senior Student of the College
in 1942. From JCH she was posted to Launceston as she pursued
a distinguished career in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and her
association with the College continued as a Life Member of
the Janet Clarke Hall Society, making generous contributions
to our building fund and artist-in-residence program. She died
peacefully on 26 May 2011. Expressing the College’s gratitude
for the scholarship, the Principal noted that it will enable future
generations of new students to benefit from the College’s
teaching expertise and pastoral support as they undertake the
demanding study required of a medical student, either through Cecily Statham (4th from left in the back row) holding the
the University’s biomedical pathway or graduate entry to the College cat
Medical degree.
Supporting the College through the
Janet Clarke Hall Advancement Committee
No doubt the founding benefactor of the College, Janet, Lady Clarke, would have been delighted that we go from strength to strength
th
in our 127 year. Her vision and philosophy, encompassing equality of opportunity for all women regardless of background, creed
or means was extraordinarily progressive for the times and laid the foundation for all that the College has stood for throughout its
history.
The Janet Clarke Hall Advancement Committee’s role is to promote and assist the College through the philanthropy of the College’s
alumni and friends. Philanthropy is extremely important to the College for two main purposes:
1 to develop the scholarship base of the College so that we can admit students who wish to be at JCH regardless of their financial
circumstances, and accordingly to promote excellence and diversity in the JCH student body.
2 to develop the College building fund through which we can maintain and improve its beautiful heritage listed building and a
wide range of facilities available to students.
Janet Clarke Hall is a not for profit organisation with needs that are many and varied. The College has been greatly assisted by
a proud history of philanthropy and by the generosity of alumni and friends. Assistance can be provided in several ways:
1 Annual giving (to fund scholarships, contribute to the building fund, establish Artist- in-Residence programmes etc.)
2 Donations specially earmarked for a particular purpose or project;
3 Bequests.
