Among the College’s photographic collection,
the College photo for 1914 reminds us about a
generation of students whose lives, and whose
families and nation, were to be changed forever
by the impact of the first ‘world’ War. More
research is required to explore the family stories
of these women. The College is currently
exploring ways to digitise and preserve its
important photographic collection so that
such images may be stored electronically and
preserved for the future.

These photos of the 1898 and 1940 tennis teams (the latter
including College Fellow Dr Olive Mence OAM) reminds us
that, while fashions may change, tennis has always featured
prominently in the life of the College. While the tennis court
itself has moved several times over the years, the court retains
heritage significance given the club’s historic status as amongst
the earliest in Victoria. Indeed the ‘Hostiles’ tennis club
predates the Student Club itself, and the court was already in Women’s Tennis 1940
place as our women defeated Ormond’s female students in Back (left to right): Mariam McPherson, Olive Wykes.

In 2016 the College will return to the old ‘tradition’ of taking
the College photo on the tennis court, as was the case for the
women of 1954 (a photo of which is found on page 23).
A recent facelift will ensure that future generations of students
will continue to enjoy a hit of tennis on our court.
