          Margaret Henderson House

The College was thrice blessed, in 2015, as Dr Margaret
Henderson visited the College to celebrate the progress of her
‘House’ as it took its place in the physical fabric and day-to-
day life of the College. At Eastertime, Margaret attended and
took great interest in the traditional ‘topping out’ ceremony –
which was also, in this case, a ‘dropping in’ ceremony as the
building was delivered via the Ormond College laneway in six
modules and carefully assembled in place over six hours. In
June a remarkable cast of dignitaries including the Chancellor, Congratulating Margaret
Vice-Chancellor, and Dean of Medicine were in attendance
for the opening of the new building by His Excellency the
Hon Alex Chernov AC QC the Governor of Victoria and its
blessing by the President of Janet Clarke Hall and Primate View from the tennis court
of the Anglican Church of Australia The Most Rev’d
         Dr Philip Freier.

Family and friends of Margaret joined alumni in celebration
of this signal event in the College’s history. As Margaret
reflected in her speech at the opening, while the College has
changed in her lifetime ‘liberal scholarship has flourished’.
She observed with a wry smile that on such occasions
‘the nominee has more usually transcended this mortal
life’. Margaret’s mental acuity is more than matched by her
stamina, and the College was thus delighted to host one
more party for Margaret in 2015 as she celebrated her one Manoeuvering between trees
hundredth birthday on 13 November – held, at her request,
