인간과 자연이 어우러진 아름다움의 미학

몇 년 전 나는 코르시카 섬 밑에 자리하고 있는 사르데니아(Sardegna) 섬을 여행한 적이 있다. 그곳에서 마음 깊이 새길 수 있었던
것은 인간을 창조하고 거대한 자연을 조화롭게 만든 신의 경지가 더할 나위 없이 경의로웠다. 우주를 구성하는 세상 곳곳에서
피부빛깔과 언어가 다른 사람들이 각기 다른 문화 속에 살고 있다는 것이 신비스러웠다.
사르데니아 섬 또한 각기 독특한 해안들로 구성되어 형태와 빛과 모양이 다른 해변에서 자연과 어우러지는 인간의 모습은 아름
다움의 절정이었다. 인간이 자연과 어우러질 때, 가장 고귀하고 아름답다는 것을 그 섬에서 실감할 수 있었다. 자연과 인간의
뗄 수 없는 조화를 느끼며 내 나라 강산, 내 조국의 범위, 내 민족이라는 의미가 소중하고 귀한 안식처로 각인되었다.

말이 통하지 않고, 문화가 다르면서도 인간이 지닌 본질적인 고독이나 슬픔은 이 우주 속에 존재하는 사람들의 공통점이었다.
이방인과 있으면서 색다른 의미의 외로움이 다가왔지만, 그런 환경에서는 어떤 이방인도 벗이 될 수 있는 <어우러짐의 미학》을
그 섬에서 배울 수 있었다.

자연은 구속된 인간의 갈증을 자유롭게 만들어 주는 해결사이고, 인간이 가장 두려워하는 것은 자신 속에 갇힌 자신일 때였다.
그 원대한 우주 속에서 인간이라는 한계를 떠나 거대한 자연과 얼크러질 때, 그런 경지가 내가 추구하는 유토피아 세계이며,
자신을 가치 있는 〈존재>로 가꾸는 <진정한 삶>의 평화로운 고지라고 생각한다.

자유를 갈망하는 사람들의 모습은 내 그림의 소재가 되고, 내 삶의 주제 또한 자연과 어우러지며 생명의 미학을 일깨워 가는
과정이기도 하다. 원대한 자연은 인간의 슬픔과 갈증을 안아주는 구원이기에 나는 그 자연 안에서 〈자유인〉이라는 명찰을 달고
살아가고 있다.

Aesthetics Striking a Harmony between Men and Nature

Several years ago I traveled to Sardegna, an island below Corsica. The landscape there reawakened me of God’s providence
creating men and splendid nature. It was mysterious to me that people of different colors speaking different languages were
living in their own culture here and there on the island or a part of the universe.
Sardegna has unique sea-shores each of which features its own form, color and look. The people living there in harmony with
the nature could no more look beautiful. On the island I could be aware again of the fact that men may look most beautiful
when they live in harmony with the nature. When I was impressed with the close bond between nature and men there, I was
awakened how my country, my rivers and mountains, territory of my fatherland, and my people are important and invaluable to
me.

Although their languages and cultures were different, the people existing in that part of the universe looked as solitary or sad
as other peoples. Amid the aliens, I felt a loneliness of another meaning, but I could learn that I would be friend any alien on the
island, namely “aesthetics of getting along”.

Nature is a trouble-solving broker who quenches men’s thirst for freedom, and men tend to fear most when they are contained
in themselves. When we could be in harmony with the nature in this great universe by overcoming the limits of our existence,
we would meet a utopia, which I have longed for. I feel that such a utopia would be a genuinely peaceful world where we could
enhance ourselves to some valuable “beings”.

The people thirsty for freedom are sources of my painting, and the theme of my lifeinvolves being in harmony with the nature
to be awakened of life aesthetics. Since the great nature redeems us by relieving us of grief and thirst, I try to live in the nature,
attaching a name tag “Free Woman” to my bosom.
