왜 풍선을 그리게 되었느냐는 질문을 종종 받는다. 그럴 때마다 '카르페 디엠'과 '메멘토 모리'라는 용어를 들어 설명한
다. 카르페 디엠, '지금을 즐겨라'는 뜻으로 사용된다. 현재에 대한 집중은 죽음을 향해가는 인간이 벌이는 시간적 저항이
라 할 수 있다. 지금 이 순간을 축제로 향유하고 시간의 흐름을 의식하지 않는 상태에 다다름으로써 영원한 시간을 누리
고 싶은 것이다. 그러나 그 누구도 죽음 앞에서 예외일 수가 없다. '죽음을 생각하라'는 메멘토 모리는 카르페 디엠의 덧
없음을 상기시킨다.

'풍선'은 축제가 벌어지는 곳에서 흔히 사용되는 물건이다. 축제의 즐거움을 고조시키면서도 그 순간이 지나면 속절없이
스러지게 될 운명을 지닌 풍선은 카르페 디엠과 메멘토 모리 사이에서 긴장과 이완을 반복하는 인간의 삶을 은유한다.
적절히 부푼 풍선은 욕망 추구와 절제 사이의 균형감을 환기한다. 오색 풍선은 각양각색의 삶을, 그러면서도 유사한 형
태로 반복되는 풍선은 별다를 것 없는 인생을 표상한다.

"How come you draw balloons?" I am sometimes asked. In response to this question, I refer to the
Latin expressions carpe diem and memento mori. Carpe diem is usually translated as "seize the day."
Living in the moment is an act of resistance against mortality. By enjoying the present as if you were
participating in a festival, you become barely aware of time, as though you were in a state of timeless
eternity. However, no one is exempt from mortality. Memento mori, meaning "remember that you
have to die," serves as a reminder of the transient nature of carpe diem.

Balloons are ubiquitous at festivals. They lift the spirits of the crowd but are inevitably destined to be
discarded. That is why a balloon serves as an apt metaphor for life, which follows a cycle of tension
and release. Fully inflated balloons illustrate the delicate balance between the pursuit of desire
and restraint. Their vibrant colors symbolize the diversity of life, while repeated balloon patterns
represent lives that follow similar paths.
