Women’s History Month: Black Women Making A Difference
I love being an unapologetic Black woman and no man, woman, history book, judge or jury is going to make
me change my mind. March is Women’s History Month. This month is dedicated to telling the stories of Black
women who made a profound impact on the world and are the vessel to our children’s future.
Black women have a rich history that ranges from chattel slavery, oppression, injustice, racism, inequality and
the list goes on. It is important to know our history so it won’t be repeated. We are the gatekeepers of our family and
it is important for us to teach our Black children our history so that it will be told correctly using explicit details
because learning begins at home. They need to learn how to stand for what is right even when it goes against the
majority. We should teach our young Black males accountability, that they are worthy, intelligent, their membership
matters and they will one day be the head of the Black family that has been dismantled. They need their Black fathers
now more than ever. We should teach our young Black females that they are beautiful, smart, to love the skin that they
are in, to dream big and they do not need a confirmation code from society about their importance or value. God,
also known as The Lily of the Valley, made them and He knows every hair on their body and what it represents. Our
Black children need to be proud of who they are.
We also need to educate our Black children about Black educators, inventors, scientists, doctors, innovators,
By Dr. Shanessa Fenner, Principal civil rights activists and inspire them to become one as well. They need to know that Blacks had to sneak to learn how
to read back in the day and now they have access to a free education so they should take full advantage of it and learn
all that they can. Teach them to love the beautiful shades of color that we represent from caramel to deep ebony. It
does not matter what skin tone you are because we ALL mark “Black “on the job application that we fill out.
Colorism should never be an issue in our race and we need to stand united. The beautiful textures of hair that we have
and the beautiful hair styles from Afro puffs, box braids, satin blow-out and Bantu knots, show our culture, taste and
appreciation of Black beauty.
They say if you want something done, ask a Black woman. We are a gender that has endured the most, but
respected and acknowledged the least. It is our duty to pass our legacy to our Black children.
The true meaning of loving the skin you are in is to love who you are, knowing your culture and heritage, knowing
your rich history and showing others every day all day that you are proud to be unapologetically BLACK.
