Mary C. Rogers was born to Mary and Foster Allen on March 12, 1932, in Bladen County. As one of
14 siblings, she was reared as both a sister and nurturer. Her entire life reflected that care, and she devoted her
time to sharing love from that well of wisdom and experience. Affectionately renowned as “Mother Rogers” to
all, she raised six children and two grandchildren of her own along side her beloved husband, Zack Rogers Jr.
Mother Rogers raised her children with an abiding respect for the Word and its value as a roadmap for life. Her
character as a mother, wife, sister, and friend was sound in every setting she graced with her presence and
equally unwavering in what she believed to be right and just. Her education was received at the historic
Laurinburg Institute, the first Black preparatory school in the nation. Despite only completing the 11 grade, she
th
went on to succeed in various professional endeavors, including entrepreneurship, over 20 years as a dedicated
J.P. Stevens employee, clerical work, and serving as a certified notary. That 11th-grade education became the
framework and foundation of success for all of her children, all of whom went on to further their studies, run their
own businesses, serve in the armed forces, and the privilege to chart their own professional path.
Mother Mary C. Allen Rogers faithfully joined St. John Holiness Church in 1952 under the leadership
of Bishop Pearson. From the very beginning, she served with a willing heart-first as an usher and soon thereaf-
ter as a devoted member of the choir. Her other faithful roles included 15 years teaching the Junior Sunday
School class and approximately eight years as Sunday School Secretary, leading to answering the call of over 20
years in the Missionary Department. The majority of which she served as Missionary President. Mother Rogers
was a missionary and servant leader. She was the hands and feet of Christ, whether vising the sick, serving as
a nurse aide, or usher, or preparing a delicious meal. The Kitchen Committee was simply an extension of where
her servant’s heart shined brightly. As First Lady to Bishop Zack Rogers, she exemplified dignity, respect, and
love in all she did. She ministered to the people of St. John not only through leadership, but through kindness,
humility, and genuine care.
“Aunt Mary Clyde” as she was to most was the cornerstone of the Allen family and the final survivor of
the 14 siblings. Her legacy includes not only her children and grandchildren, but nieces and nephews whose
th
only connection to their legacy was through her. The family is left to cherish and fondly remember her delicious
home-cooked meals and cakes. She prepared them with the same love she showed in her service to God and His
people-always preparing with “enough” in mind, inspired by the teaching of her mother to always make enough
to share.
When faced with the impossible challenges, her belief was never deterred. That undeniable regard for
God’s power, grace, and mercy was evidenced when she faced a life-threating condition. She was known to say,
“Well, if He don’t do it, it’s not because He can’t.” It was that unwavering, conscious contact with God that
ordered her steps.
She leaves to cherish her many wonderful memories three daughter three daughters: Jackie (Robert)
