IT Week Ushers with the
1st Student Cybersecurity
Forum
Words: Bea Guevarra
Despite being online, the College of IT as it celebrates
its Information Technology week, held the 2nd IN2ITION
Expert Series: 1st Student Cybersecurity Forum last May 6,
2021. The said event was in coordination with the Office of
Student Affairs and ably supported by the Junior Philippine
Computer Society-SISC Chapter, South Mansfield College, and
Beyond IT Services (BITS), the outreach arm of the College of IT.
The affair was quite well attended and had a very interactive
audience.
Mr. John Panes, an SISC BSIT alumnus and the
Cybersecurity Associate Director, Security Operations Center
Manager of SGV|EY Philippines, who was the first speaker
to talk at the event, introduced his topic entitled “Managing
Global Cybersecurity Operations during the Pandemic.” He
emphasized the significance of what people like him do. He
described how they test and monitor system vulnerability
and safeguard systems against “attacks” from all across the
world. In addition to providing the finest solutions or “design”
to establish approaches and targets for businesses ahead of
time. He also taught the audience about security, stressing the
importance of being prepared for the worst-case situation.
Waiting for a data breach or any incident to occur should not
be necessary unless we are prepared. Companies do not place
a high priority on security, but Mr. Panes says that “we are
getting there.” Multi-stakeholders should be more mindful and
aware of the reality in cyberspace. As well as being cautious
about where we connect and how we can protect ourselves
online, especially during this pandemic.
The crowd had a fun time with our final speaker
who had his own personal sound effects with him, Mr.
Ricson Singson Que, CEO of SQurity, during his presentation
titled “Digital Hygiene is ABSO-lutely,” capitalized “ABSO”
short for “always be safe online!” He discussed the digital
change that has occurred, as well as how the pandemic has
resulted in these digital transformations of businesses and
the common internet user’s lifestyle. He described how many
digital day-to-day activities have accelerated, such as video
communication, e-commerce growth, and remote learning/
