Garden Checklist: Prevent those winter weeds now
Contributed
The Garden Check- list is filled with tips and tricks for local gar- deners who wish to keep their greenery, flowers, and herbs looking beau- tiful all year long.
Spend a little time each day doing fall gar- den cleaning and lawn renovation. Next month is a busy month!
Tasks for this time of year include preventing germination of winter weeds like annual blue- grass (Poa annua) and chickweed, apply pre- emergence herbicide following label instruc- tions.
Give special attention
to watering container plants. Harvest and dry herbs. Divide spring and summer blooming bulbs. When pruning, re- member to sharpen your pruning tools in prepara- tion for all pruning.
Fall is a great time to plant trees and pe- rennials. When plant- ing, roots become well established during cool winter months allowing plants to cope with the following summer’s heat and aridity without addi- tional stress.
Be sure to provide sufficient water and shade while new trees and shrubs settle into the landscape.
Citrus and avocado
trees planted in the late summer or fall may re- quire additional fall pro- tection for this winter if new growth hasn’t suffi- ciently hardened off by the time temperatures fall below freezing.
Wait until winter to plant bareroot stock like roses or stone fruit trees. Enjoy now, an- nuals and perennials, lisianthus (Eustoma), zinna, moss pink, (Phlox subulata) geranium (Pel- argonium), bulbs, corms, tubers: spider lily (Lyco- ris) Trees, shrubs, vines: chiles, grapes, melon, peach.
Things to ponder, nut and citrus trees need regular deep irrigation
to produce good quality crops.
Some cities have re- cently relaxed watering rules to allow irrational of some food producing gardens more frequent- ly than twice a week. Check with your local agency before altering your watering schedule.
