A scintillating shoot- ing performance by Clo- vis High School denied the Immanuel High Ea- gles a shot at successfully defending their Tourna- ment of Champions boys basketball title.
The Cougars hit an amazing 19 3-point bas- kets out of 27 attempts from that range on their way to a 97-60 semifi- nal drubbing of the de- fending Division 5 state runners-up on Dec. 6 at IHS gym. Clovis (5-3 as of Dec. 12) went on to capture the tourney title with a 94-79 victory over Lemoore High on Dec. 7.
The Eagles (6-5 through Dec. 16 games) played without leading scorer Shawn Rodgers, who missed out his sec- ond straight game under concussion protocol after colliding with a defender in a 92-45 opening round win over Woodlake High on Dec. 4. The junior guard also sat out a 67-59 loss to Fresno Christian in the third place game on Dec. 7, as well as the Central Sequoia League opener against Kingburg (a 95-66 loss on Dec. 10).

Senior guard Cal Stil- son — who was voted tournament MVP — was the biggest 3-point assas- sin for the Cougars, who roared ahead to stay with a trio of threes to break a 4-4 tie. Stilson had two of those outside bombs, finishing with three treys and 15 points in the first half and six in the game
for a game-high 28 points. Sophomore guard Ashlan Morris also was lethal from the outside, making four of his five threes in the first half as Clovis stormed out to a 51-28 lead at the break. The Cougars maintained an overall offensive and defensive intensity throughout, building the lead to as many as 40
points late in the game. Junior Winston Wil- liams led the Eagles with 18 points while sopho-
more Holden Thomas added 16 points. The hosts were quickly rush- ing their offense in an ef- fort to catch up, and were plagued by cold shooting and turnovers.
Five Cougars scored in double figures. Fol- lowing Stilson and Mor- ris (15 points) were Matt Adesanmi (15 points), D’Andre Scott (15) and Diego Celaya (10).
