Joseph Charles Akers
Sept. 28, 1921
~ Nov. 23, 2019
Joseph Charles Akers passed away on November 23, 2019 at the age of 98. Joe was born Sept 28 1921 in Dinuba, Tulare County, California where the “Akers” name was well known. Both his father, Dick Akers and grandfather, Joseph Akers, were farmers and blacksmiths by trade. They were instrumental in the development of their Dinuba community. He was very proud to come from a family of hard working people.
Joe lost his father at a young age. When he was 13 years old both he and his brother went to work to help support themselves and their mother. Joe delivered goods for the local pharmacy using his donkey and a wooden cart. During WW2 he interrupted his college studies to enlist in the Army Air Corp, August 1943. He devoted 4 years, training at Valley Forge and receiving a commission as Second Lieutenant Armament Division at Yale University.
After the war he returned to California and completed his education at University of California Berkeley with a degree in forestry, making him the rst college graduate in the history of his family.
In 1951 he married Mary Rachel Calvert and whisked her away to the tiny logging town of Sterling City California where he was employed by the Diamond Match Corporation. After a brief location in Chico, California he and his family settled in Red Bluff, California in 1959 with the opening of the Diamond National Lumber Mill. He was well respected among those in the industry, making many friends along the way. He quickly climbed the corporate ladder eventually attaining the title of Timber & Lands Manager West Coast Division.
While Joe was dedicated to his career and proud of his accomplishments, his real satisfaction in life was his lifelong love for the outdoors.
Beginning at the age of two he was an avid sherman. Even in his early 90s he was still taking his boat up to the lake to go shing. He also enjoyed bird hunting and after retirement he developed some land in Butte County to operate as a Pheasant Hunting Club. He was happy to share these interests with his children, his nephews, his grandchildren and any of their friends, thus passing along to the next generations an understanding and respect for the wildlife and environment he so greatly loved.
And his dogs! Oh how he loved his dogs! Mary often said she would like to “come back as one of his dogs”.
Joe was predeceased by his parents Roy Dick Akers and Lucile Brent Akers, his brother Richard Brent Akers and all of his extended family, Aunts, Uncles & cousins.
He is survived by his wife Mary, his children Richard Akers & Marlu Akers Stroud (Dale), his grandchildren: Laura Reeves, Danny Reeves (Valerie), Bryan Akers, David Akers, Dallas Stroud, & Austin Stroud, and two great grandchildren: Avery & Tinley Reeves.
Joe enjoyed learning. He never lost interest in discovering new information and he liked to share what he knew. It has been said (lovingly) that if you ask him the time, he will tell you how to make the watch. He will be remembered as a friendly man, quiet and thoughtful and sometimes humorous. He was a man of high principals, responsible, true to his word and always a gentleman.
He lived a good and noble life.
It was his request that there be no services.

She was born on the family ranch in Reedley, California on March 22, 1928 to Margaret and John Danielsen. Dorothy graduated from Reedley High School and Reedley Junior College. She married the love of her life, Floyd E. Vaughan who passed away in 1996. She loved to bake pies and was an excellent cook. Dorothy ran the family farm from 1983 through 2001 when she sold it to Dean and Mary Thonesen and was the bookkeeper for her husband’s blacksmithing business until it closed in 1990.
Dorothy is survived by her daughters Christine M. (Jeffrey) Vaughan-Grant of Fresno, Mary-Margaret (Donald) King of Kingsburg and Step-daughter Sandra (Rodney) Petersen of Fresno. She is also survived by her grand-children Michael (Melissa) Cederquist of ElkGrove, Leigh-Ann (Robby) Olsen of Visalia, Rebecca (Mark) Luplow of Clovis and Alan Petersen of Australia, Donald P.W. King of Texas, Charlie (Angel) King of Texas, Aaron (LeAnn) Grant of Clovis and Matt (Katrina) Grant of Ohio. She is survived by 17 great-grandchildren. Her dear Sister-in-law Margaret Danielsen Hongola, and nephews Lee (Donna) Danielsen of Rancho Mirage, Steven (Janet) Danielsen of Georgia and Marjean (Bill) Seeger of Newport, plus numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Recently, Dorothy was awarded the Unit of the Year Award by the Kingsburg 191.
At the Fresno District Fair, Dorothy designed and worked on the Agricultural fair booth for the Parlier Lion’s Club for many years. Her time was not only spent on the design, but by spending countless hours in its creation.
As a 91 year member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Selma, Dorothy was a faithful member who was baptized, con rmed and married in the church where her grandfather was a charter member. She served faithfully in the Martha’s Society as Treasurer and President, member of the Altar Guild, and Sunday School Teacher. Her love of her Lord Jesus Christ was evident in her life and passed that gift to her children and grandchildren. In addition, Dorothy was a member of the Danish American Historical Society of Fresno, Friends of the Kingsburg Depot, and Kingsburg Historical Society.
Dorothy was a bright spirit in the lives of many, through the years. She was an avid Dodger fan who stuck by them from Brooklyn to Los Angeles. Her Arabian stallion, Saborr, went Top 5 Paci c Slope Champion, Region II Top 10 and was ultimately awarded Legion of Honor at the Santa Barbara Showgrounds. Horse shows brought a lot of pleasure in the lives of Dorothy and Floyd. It allowed them to travel to places they would not have gone.
