MVT Staff Report
The Reedley Police Depart- ment invites the public to watch the annual flag lowering ceremony for fallen Officer Javier Bejar at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, in front of the department at 843 G St.
The ceremony honors Bejar, who died Feb. 25, 2010 during a standoff in Minkler. He was the first officer killed in the line of duty in the 100-year history of the Reedley Police Department. Bejar and Fresno County Sheriff's homi- cide detective Joel Wahlenmaier were fatally shot in the incident that began as an attempt to serve
a search warrant at a residence in Minkler.
As ordered in the proclamation passed by the Reedley City Coun- cil, the police department will be lowering the American flag in front of the department to half- mast. The flag will remain that way until Sunday, March 1.
Following the flag-lowering ceremony, the public is invited to an informal gathering at the Min- kler Memorial site for reflection and prayer. The site is located just off the north side of old Highway 180 in Minkler.

The Chamber is rec- ognizing Baker as its Citizen of the Year for his work as a pastor and police chaplain. Working through Hope Now Min- istries, he was a driving force in assisting with the city to establish the Faith House in south- west Reedley. The shel- ter for families in crisis has helped more than 50 people from becoming homeless.
A nominating letter said Baker as pastor opens his church week- ly for people on crisis to get a warm meal and meet one-on-one with Fresno County service providers.
"He has also served as police chaplain for many years, coming out to tragedies at all hours of the night to help fam- ilies in crisis," the nomi-
