This year, the Sierra Kings Health Care Dis- trict committed almost $175,000 in grants to local agencies for the imple- mentation of preventative programming related to obesity, diabetes, and be- havioral health care.
Sierra View Homes of Reedley is the recipient of one of these grants, a $20,000 award targeting seniors in their indepen- dent living community.
Sierra View Homes was founded by the Reedley First Mennonite Church in 1960. Since then, it has grown from a 26- to a 59- bed skilled nursing facility and added a multi-level re- tirement community with the addition of 78 assisted living residents and 115 independent living apart- ments. The independent living community allows seniors who are actively self-sufficient to care for

Seniors at Sierra View Homes in Reedley lifted plastic recre- ation balls as part of their "Get Moving" program focused on proper exercise, balanced diet and improved mental health.
Under the direction of Registered Physical and Occupational Therapists, these independent seniors undergo pre-risk for fall assessments to determine the type of physical and occupational interventions needed. Post-risk for fall assessments are conduct- ed at the end of the eight- week classes.
Findings from the first three sessions indicate significant improvements with balance and mobility.
“So far, participants have reported gains in confidence with balancing and walking. They also re- port having new friends to exercise with.” said Vito Genna, executive director.
In addition, almost all participants were con- sidered at lower risk for falls at the conclusion of the class.
“It is the district’s intention to create pro- grams that serve a broad cross section of the com- munity," said Chinayera Black, CEO of Sierra Kings Health Care Dis- trict. "This grant aids se- niors in maintaining their independence at no cost to them.”
themselves in their own apartments nestled in a supportive community.
The Sierra View Homes independent liv- ing community is based on an “age in place” philoso- phy that allows seniors to live in a residence of their choice for as long as they are able. However, unlike skilled nursing services, seniors in independent liv- ing communities are often not afforded physical and occupational therapies
that boost strength, tech- nique to avoid falls, and self-sufficiency.
This is where the grant from the Sierra Kings Health Care District comes in. With grant fund- ing, Sierra View Homes launched the “Get Mov- ing” program to offer its independent seniors age 85 years and older access to eight-week classes fo- cused on proper exercise, balanced diet, and im- proved mental health.
