The Garden Check- list is filled with tips and tricks for local gar- deners who wish to keep their greenery, flow- ers and hearbs looking beautiful all year long.
Remember to keep watering trees and shrubs every two weeks until rainy weather ar- rives in earnest, be- cause they require deep watering.
Tasks for this time of the year include start- ing to think about pro- viding frost protection for citrus as tempera- tures start to drop into the low 30's once winter is here.
As overnight tem- peratures drop into the low 30's, provide frost protection for citrus,
avocados and other sub- tropicals.
Monitor drainage af- ter watering container plants to be sure plant roots are not standing in water.
Pruning, leaf fall is the time to start prun- ing — except for apri- cots and olives, which should have been done in August.
Fertilizing, feed cool- weather plants and veg- etables.
Wait 2 weeks after planting new flowers and vegetables before feeding with organic or complete fertilizer.
Planting, continue to plant the final cool- weather annuals.
Perennials include Yarrow (Achillea), Ar- temisia ‘Powis Castle’.
Bulbs, corms, tu-
bers: grape hyacinth (Muscari), daffodil (Narcissus).
Fruits and vegeta- bles: parsley – trans- plant, spinach, plant from seed.
Annuals: Calen- dula, California poppy (Eschscholzia), bee balm (Monarda).
Trees, shrubs, vines: Chitalpa, rockrose (Cis- tus), Rose of Sharon (Hi- biscus).
Enjoy now annuals and perennials: Iceland poppy (Papaver), Rus- sian sage (Perovskia).
Fruits and vegeta- bles: avocados, beets, cabbage, chili peppers, olives.
Trees, shrubs, vines: rose. Fall color: heav- enly bamboo (Nandina domestica), persimmon.
Things to ponder,
dig up dahlia and bego- nia tubers and gladiolus corms, trim dead stems or leaves and store in a cool, dry place.
Drought tip, shorter days and cooler tem- peratures result in low- er water use by plants. Adjust sprinkler timers accordingly.

The Sanger Friends of the Library took the opportunity to recognize two volunteers for their work and dedication; Cathy Mooney and Mar- garet Rocha.
Mooney was thanked for leading the weekly Chair Yoga group and helping seniors and those with disabilities to im- prove their strength and flexibility.
She also participated and intermittently helped facilitate the local Yarns group by sharing her knitting and crochet knowledge to help others.
Margaret Rocha was recognized for her many
hours of volunteer activi- ties. She served as the co- chairman of the library’s annual “Blossom Trails used book sale,” as well as chair for the Loteria program and also chair of the bilingual preschool story time, a program provided by the Friends of the Library volun- teers.
Rocha and Mooney received a card of thanks and a small token of ap- preciation to recognize their generosity. These ladies have donated hours of their time to make the library a fun place to visit.

was the first time they’d actually held an event like this.
The podium at the event had a large poster with the story and photo of Marjaree Mason.
I will admit that I never knew the story of Marjaree Mason, only that there is a housing center located in Fres- no dedicated to helping victims of domestic vio- lence named after her.
As I began to re- search Marjaree Ma- son, I found her photo and her story. Another beautiful woman with her whole life ahead of her, taken too soon.
Marjaree Mason was killed by her boyfriend, a Fresno County Sher- iff’s Deputy who ended up killing himself.
According to mmcenter.org, Mason was a private person, she never talked about the abuse by her boy- friend, Robert Tillman.
The story of Marja- ree Mason gained na- tional attention. At the time it brought to light the issue of domestic violence.
To this day, the Mar-
jaree Mason story and her legacy lives on. As October comes to and end, the issue of domes- tic violence and those in abusive relationships will still be ongoing.
Silvia also told me during our interview that victims of abuse need to know they are not alone.
“There are people, there are resources available for them and they can speak out,” she said.
“They will be pro- tected, everyone should speak out, nobody should be living under that shadow, under the darkness of domestic violence.”
