Legendary wrestling coach Kent Olson has been named head coach of Dinuba High’s wrestling program.
Olson’s name had been floating around as the lead candidate for the position and it was official on Sept. 24 after Dinuba Unified School District’s Board of Trustees meeting. Olson takes over for Michael Wright, who left earlier in the year and is now the athletic director at Redwood High.
“Coach Wright has done a tre- mendous job there,” Olson said. “I’ve known him a long time when he coached at Hanford and I was at Lemoore. He’s had some pretty tough kids.”
Olson brings 45 years of coaching experience at the high school and ju- nior college level. He was previously the head coach at Pioneer Valley for three seasons. Last year, Pioneer claimed the Division 2 championship.
Olson said he was commuting back and forth from his home in Lemoore to Santa Maria and now it will be a shorter drive.
“It’s going to be a good thing,” he said. “I’ve met some of the kids and I love the community. I’ve met some of the parents and I hope I can take it to
the next level.”
Olson started the wrestling pro-
gram at West Hills Community Col- lege leading the Golden Eagles to three conference championships and two regional championships. West Hills finished third in the state tour- nament in 2012 and fifth in 2011. He was named Coach of the Year seven times during his tenure at West Hills. Olson served 20 years at Lemoore High where he had a record of 331- 32-1. His wrestlers captured 17 valley championships, 13 division champion- ships, four state champions and 101 in- dividual West Yosemite League titles.
Olson was inducted into the Cali- fornia Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2014 and is currently the second winningest coach in California high school history.
“With all of the accomplishments wrestlers have achieved under Ol- son’s tutelage, what impresses us the most is the fact that he knows the most important kids he will coach are the kids that need the program more than the program needs them,” stated DHS athletic director JohnC Freitas in a press release. “He is a transforma- tional coach and I have seen him turn kids that have never wrestled before high school into champions on the mat and in life.”

Velarde sees more action as Pittsburgh eyes USL playo s
MVT Staff Report
Anthony Velarde saw about 40 minutes of action off the bench for the Pitts- burgh Riverhounds SC, but was held off the score- board as the hosts dropped a 1-0 United Soccer League decision to Hartford Ath- letic on Sept. 26.
Velarde, a second-year midfielder from Reedley who starred for the Pi- rates and Fresno Pacific University before turning pro, came in for starter Ray Lee in the 52nd min- ute with his team down a goal. The Riverhounds (10- 4-1) had opportunities to tie the score, but fell short as Hartford (9-3-2) moved within two points of Pitts- burgh for the league in Group F.
The Riverhounds close out the regular season this Saturday, Oct. 3, with a home match against Philadelphia Union II. A win would secure a home playoff match beginning next week.
