to take to the Mayeda’s on weekends.
Despite these chal- lenges, the Mayeda’s were able to buy the ranch back after the war. In a show of appre- ciation, Hiroshi built a house on the ranch for the family, according to Donna.
The couple then made Dinuba their permanent home. Donna said her parents were married for over 70 years and en- joyed ballroom dancing in the 80’s and 90’s.
“My mom really
wanted to do it,” she said. Upon mentioning ball- room dancing, Dorothy perked up and smiled.
The couple traveled to dance in various city’s including Fresno, Las Ve- gas, Los Angeles and San Francisco. “You know there is everything to like about dancing,” she said. “You have to enjoy the music and tell your- self to remember the steps.”
Dorothy said Hiro was a member of the Di- nuba Lion's Club and if there was a dance on a meeting date, he’d rather dance.
“He really enjoyed
it,” she said. As years passed, Dorothy’s health began to decline and eventually required 24-hour care. Mary Gonzales, Mellie Aguilar and Diane Lucio care for Dorothy, according to Donna.
Gonzales said she con- siders Dorothy as family and has learned so much from her.
“It is very reward- ing,” said Gonzales. “They have so much wis- dom and I listen to their stories. What I learned from the elderly is they work hard and don’t stop. Dorothy truly is a go-get- ter.”
