During his remarks, Ochoa shared that “Monsi- gnor John and I have more than a couple of things in common.” For example, both men were ordained by Cardi- nal Timothy Manning — the bishop’s came in 1970 in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
The other common trait was that Esquivel and Ochoa both studied for the priest- hood at the St. John’s Semi- nary in Camarillo.
“While I was there, I nev- er realized that I would end up being his bishop,” he said. Ochoa drew laughter from the congregation by add- ing “Nor did he, or he might have signed up for another diocese.”
Ochoa compared Esquiv- el to the “good shepherd” that gives Christians a sense of security.
“He provides nourish- ment and protection. And he remained faithful to his sheep,” he said.
Ochoa told how Esquivel eventually entered the min- istry after recovering from a potentially-fatal bout with Valley fever during his child-
hood.
“I really believe that it’s
his personal history that has given this man of God such a passionate heart,” he said. “A shepherd’s heart. Especially when he’s with those on the periphery.” Ochoa told how Esquivel has mentored many young priests during his 50 years, and said he provided a wonderful example to the Church.
“My friends, I ask you to reflect just for a moment on what the ministry of a shep- herd such as Monsignor John does,” he said. “The babies who have been baptized, the numerous reconciliations, the marriage unions blessed and consecrated. Many, ma- ny sick anointed. His prayer life has affected so many people.”
Esquivel and Ochoa also took communion, and parish-
ioners later participated.
In thanking St. Anthony parishioners for their sup- port the past 10-plus years, Esquivel led in a round of applause for the children. He said working with them has
given him great joy.
The Mass of Thanksgiv-
ing was the first of two days of events celebrating Es- quivel’s half-century in the priesthood.
Later on April 27, Es- quivel participated in a lunch at St. La Salle Catho- lic School with Ochoa and the visiting priests. Then on April 28, a bilingual Mass of Thanksgiving took place at St. Anthony Church in the afternoon, followed by a ticketed dinner that evening at Ridge Creek Golf Club in Dinuba.
