MVT Staff Report
The accomplice in a 2017 rob- bery that ended with a police shootout, leaving one suspect dead, has pleaded guilty for his involvement and now faces 25 years in prison.
According to the Dinuba Po- lice Department, Christian Alfred Garcia, 25, of Dinuba plead guilty to second degree robbery with several enhancements, including gang and street terrorism, as well as repeat violent offender. Garcia will also receive a second strike.
On Jan. 5, 2017, at approximate- ly 9:51 p.m., a Dinuba Police Of- ficer walked into the Texaco gas
station in the 1200 block of North Alta Avenue and found two male subjects holding the store clerk at gunpoint. Police say both subjects were armed with handguns and began firing at the officer.
During the exchange, the two subjects fled from the store as one suspect got into a getaway ve- hicle that was parked outside. The other suspect attempted to flee on foot while continuing to engage fire as the officer gave chase.
Police say the officer was able to return fire during the chase and at one point struck the sus- pect several times. That suspect, later identified as 20-year old Luis Vargas, was later transported to
a local hospital where he suc- cumbed to his injuries.
An investigation revealed that the store clerk was assaulted during the robbery. He was also treated at a nearby hospital for his injuries and later released.
The officer was not injured during the incident.
Garcia and another suspect, Sam- uel Composeco, were later arrested with the assistance of the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office, the Reedley and Farmersville police departments and the California Highway Patrol.
Garcia will be officially sen- tenced on Oct. 17, while the other suspect, Composeco, is set for trial on Oct. 29.
