Eagles baseball beats Vikings

The Immanuel High Eagles baseball team was in second place in the Central Sequoia League, following two wins over Kingsburg High School.
The Eagles earned an 11-4 win on April 12 and a 7-3 win on April 14. Both games were played at the Immanuel High Sports Complex.
Immanuel lost to Kings- burg High 10-8 on April 10 in Kingsburg.
“We know when we play in the CSL, every game is go- ing to be a battle,” said Josh Franco, Immanuel High head coach. “Our goal was to jump out ahead and play better de- fense and we did it.”
As of April 17, the Eagles were 13-6 overall and 4-2 in the CSL and one game behind first-place Selma High who is at 5-2.
On April 12, the Eagles beat Kingsburg High 11-4.
With the game tied 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning, the Eagles scored eight runs over the next three innings to win.
JT Friesen earned the win on the mound, pitching a com- plete game and striking out six batters.
“JT is starting to pitch consistently for us,” Franco said. “The way he threw to- night is a perfect example to high school pitchers every- where. You pound the strike zone and use what you have to get quick outs.”
Chris Gurrola went 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Derek Wood had two RBIs. Friesen, Moses Gomez, Tommy Kawagoe, Bradley Colins-Dunn and Ro- man Rosales each had one.
On April 14, the Eagles trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the third inning.

Friesen had six strikeouts in the Eagles' 11-4 win over the Vikings.
Friesens record this season is 6-2.
As of April 17, Immanuel High is 4-2 in the Central Sequoia League.

Pirates open NYL title defense

The Reedley High Pi- rates softball team start- ed their quest for a third straight North Yosemite League Championship with convincing wins over Sun- nyside High and Roosecelt High schools.
The Pirates, who have won the last two NYL Championships and five of the last six, opened NYL play with an 8-0 victory over Sunnyside High on April 10 at Reedley High School.
The Pirates then beat Roosevelt High 14-3 on April 13 at Reedley High School.
As of April 17, the Pi- rates were 13-5 overall and 2-0 in the NYL.
The Pirates have won 20 straight games in the NYL dating back to 2016.
“We put together good performances,” said Kath- ryn Buckley, Reedley High Pirates head coach. “We had some expectations as coaches and the players met those during the two games.”
On April 10 against Sunnyside High, Alexa Gonzalez pitched a com- plete game, striking out six batters.
Emma Mulligan went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Marissa Alvarez was 2-for-3 with two doubles. She also had one RBI and scored two runs. Angel Alonzo was 2-for-3 and scored two runs.

Alec Akins, Reedley Col- lege Tigers pitcher, threw a no-hitter to lead the Tigers to a 1-0 victory over Porterville College on April 14 in Porter- ville. Akins also struck out eight batters.
Reedley College's win completed a three-game sweep of Porterville College.
The Tigers were coming off a 10-1 win over Porterville
College on April 10, in Porter- ville and a 25-1 win on April 12 at Reedley College.
On April 10, Reedley Col- lege opened the three-game series against Porterville Col- lege with a 10-1 win in Porter- ville.
Brady Barcellos earned the win on the mound.
Jackson Leach and Luke Juarez each had two RBIs.

Reedley High names Athletes of the Month for March

Dani Denton, Reedley High School swimmer, was chosen Reedley High School's Female Athlete of the Month for March.

Reedley High School re- cently announced that Greg Quintanilla and Dani Den- ton are the Male and Female Athletes of the Month for March.

Greg Quintanilla
Greg Quintanilla, Reedley High Pirates boys baseball player, is a three-year varsity player for the Pirates.
Quintanilla, a senior, is the starting catcher for the Pirates and currently has a .342 batting average, with 13 hits and 13 walks.
He also has a 3.57 grade point average.
“The kind of guy you can talk with to get a better under-
standing of your team from a player/teenager's point of view.”
Dani Denton
Dani Denton, a senior Reedley High Pirates swim- mer, has seven valley qualify- ing times this season, includ- ing three with relay teams.
Denton swims the fastest leg on the relay team.
Denton and the Pirates swim team will compete against Fresno High School on Friday, April 20, at Reedley High School.
“Leading by being one of the first girls in the pool ev- eryday, finishing all workouts and coming to practice.”
