Relays kick o track season

The Dinuba High boys and girls track and field teams were in action on Saturday at the Central Valley Relays held in Dinuba.
Senior distance runner Johnathan Padilla placed fifth overall in the 1,600 with a time of 4 minutes, 56.10 seconds and teammate Diego Estrada was 10th in 5:02.30. The overall winner of the race was Ivan Mendez of Monache who was
timed in 4:34.20.
Thrower Estevan Diaz was
fifth in the discus with a mark of 110-feet-5 inches and he also was sixth in the shot put with a mark of 41-10 1/2. Tulare Western’s Aaron Tejeda was a double winner capturing the discus (150-04) and shot put (50-1/2).
The 4x100 meter relay team of Michael Wilson, Francisco Alburto, Devon Mendoza and Angel Lopez had a time of 47.69 for 10th place. The same team in a different order was 11th in the
4x200 in 1:43.78. Bakersfield posted a solid time of 43.6 to win the 4x100 and posted a top time of 1:31.18 in the 4x200.
Golden Valley led the team standings with 61.5 points while Madera had 56 and Tulare Western scored 54 points.
The 4x800 meter relay team of Natalie Cristoso, Jackie Delgado, Ali Ontiveros and Amanda Soto placed 9th overall in a time of 12:41.52. Madera won the event in a time of 10:28.56.
Another relay team that placed in the top-10 was the 4x400 that
consisted of Evelyn Hernandez, Karen Arduengo, Alissa Bruno and Georgina Arroyo who had a time of 5:37.29. Waterford clocked in a time of 4:25.81 to win the event.
The relay team of Amanda Valdez, Brenda Mendoza, Brittany Garcia and Kaelyn Burela placed 15th overall in the 4x200 with a time of 2:08.80. Bakersfield won the event in a time of 1:49.13.
Both teams will be in action on Saturday at the Sanger Spring Classic.
Local players brace for CCCAA playoffs

Riding a nine-game winning streak, the College of the Sequoias women’s basketball team opens the California Community College Athletic Association’s Northern California Regionals at home on Saturday against Solano at 7 p.m.
The fourth-seeded Giants finished the regular season with a 26-3 record and were Central Valley Conference co-champions with Merced College.
In their finale against West Hills-Lemoore on Feb. 23, COS pulled away in the second half for a 69-40 win. Former Orosi High standout MaRazelle Quicio had three points for COS. Adriana Gonzalez, another former OHS player, saw playing time for West Hills as she finished with six points and six rebounds.
In a 93-23 rout over Porterville, Quicio had seven points to go along with four steals and four assists.
Reedley College headed to the playoffs: After finishing in third place in the tough Central Valley Conference, the Reedley College Tiger women’s basketball team is headed to the CCCAA NorCal regionals.
The 13th-seeded Lady Tigers (7-5, 15-12) will head to third-seeded San Joaquin Delta (23-5) on Friday for the second round of
the 18-team tournament. Two first round games are set for Wednesday, Feb. 27. The four third round winners on March 9 advance to the CCCAA Women’s Basketball Championship on March 17-19 at Ventura College.
Delta finished second in their conference behind top seeded Diablo Valley.
One of the biggest Reedley wins of the season came on Wednesday, Feb. 20 when the Lady Tigers traveled to their district rival Fresno City College and came home with a 76-73 victory. It was the first time in many years that Reedley recorded two conference victories in the season over the Rams, who finished at 6-6 in CVC action and 18-11 overall. FCC was seeded ahead of the Tigers, as they were 12th.
In a contest that was close all the way, former Dinuba High player Stephanie Cervantes 3-pointers and led RC with 16 points. I’man Conley recorded a double double with 15 points and 12 rebounds while Zavia Barlow also had 15 points.
All eight Tigers scored on Saturday in a 76-33 rout of Porterville College. The contest was close early, as Reedley led by only a 10-7 count after one quarter. But the Lady Tigers stepped up the defense in the next 10 minutes, holding the Pirates to just three points to take a 27-10 halftime lead.

“Kirsten is pitching very well for us,” Patterson said. “We started off kind of slow and came on late in the game.”
Patterson said a noticeable difference is the teams ability to steal bases.
“We have some players with speed and it does make a difference,” he said.
In a 13-1 home win on Feb. 19 against Coalinga, Dinuba
took advantage of the Horned Toads pitching woes as 11 batters were issued walks in the game, according to Patterson.
Dinuba was coming off an impressive 13-1 win over Mission Oak-Tulare on Feb. 12.
In that game, the Emperors held a 4-1 lead entering the final frame and they erupted for nine runs to put away the Hawks (1-2). Felecity Morales and Jordynn Acevedo each had 3 RBI’s while Alexa Garcia was
5-for-5 at the plate and scored two runs.
“Alexa is hitting the ball really well. She had a good game for us.” Patterson said.
Kailey Villareal had three hits and Riley Bautista also contributed with a pair of hits as each player drove in a run.
“Kailey’s bat is also coming around,” Patterson said.
Juliana Flores picked up the win in the circle tossing five innings spacing out four hits
with seven strikeouts before being relieved by Martinez.
Dinuba had a game against Centennial-Bakersfield postponed due to rain, according to Patterson.
“We’re trying to see if we can reschedule that game,” he said. “The rain has been spotty.”
Dinuba will be in action on Monday as they’ll face El Diamante and Central at the Buchanan Preseason Tournament.
Arreola at 120. Castro lost both his matches while Arreola dropped his first match to Carson Sauriol of Poway before he posted a 16-0 technical fall against Giovanni Thai of Lowell. Arreola then defeated Jay T. Appleton of Frontier, 6-1, and then posted a 6-4 win over TJ Ruiz of Vacaville before falling to Adam Arenas of Lincoln-San Jose.
In the team standings, Dinuba finished 39th overall with 24.5 points.
Buchanan claimed its fourth straight CIF state title with 235 points.

The two teams were tied at 34 all early in the third quarter before Rodriguez pushed the Emperors ahead with a pair of free throws. Isaak Flores then followed with a 3-pointer and Jacob Rodriguez added a rebound basket and Magaña’s 3 pushed the lead to double digits, 44-34, with 5:19. Dinuba followed with another flurry with a put back basket from J. Rodriguez and an inside bucket from Sinuhe Vargas. Garza then added another 3 and Brian Ortuno’s layup put the Emperors up 53-37.
Down 59-49 in the fourth, Cesar Chavez cut the lead to
59-53 on a basket by Fernando Carranza. Baskets by Calderon and L. Rodriguez made the score 65-55 with under 2:30. Chavez responded with a basket by Imaan Gill and a pair of free throws by Darrian Lopez. After the Titans’ Noly Mercado made 1 of 2 free throws to make the score 65-60 with 1:25 in the game, Calderon scored on an inside basket for and two free throws from L. Rodriguez sealed the game for DHS.
Dinuba opened the game with a quick 12-0 run and led 18-12 after the first quarter. Chavez refused to give in as the Titans cut the lead to 34-31 at the half.
L. Rodriguez had a huge night finishing with a game-high 28 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Long opened the championships with a pin against Isaac Morris of Castro Valley and was victorious against Cole Chapman of Vacaville, 7-3. Long then moved onto face Cosio, who posted a 4-1 win, sending Long to the consolation bracket.
Long said he is undecided on what college he’d like to attend to wrestle or play football.

after the senior placed fourth in the 170-pound weight class at the California Interscholastic Federation state wrestling championships held in Bakers eld.

Emperors Boys Basketball AAU travel team tryouts will be held from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5 at the Dinuba High East and West gymnasiums.
There will be five teams for 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades
with each team to have 10-12 players.
All teams will play 5 to 6 weekend tournaments during the months of March, April and May.

Dinamite volleyball developmental program

Dinamite volleyball club will be holding a head start development program for boys and girls ages 7-11.
Learn the fundamentals and biomechanics of volleyball. The
program will be from 1:15 – 3:15 p.m. each Saturday beginning on March 2 through April 27 at the Dinuba Sportsplex.
Cost is $150.
