Traffic studies don't agree with complaints about safety issues at the Bethel and 5th intersection
Shootout near Sanger closes North Avenue
Mike Nemeth/Sanger Herald
A shootout between two vehicles near Del Rey and North av- enues on Tuesday afternoon resulted in one of the cars crash- ing into the property of a single-family home, police say. The incident took place about 3:30 p.m. just outside Sanger. By 4 p.m., Fresno County Sheriff's Office cruisers had parked along North with their lights flashing. Sanger police assisted by block- ing access to the area. The suspects reportedly fled, and no injuries were reported. The Sheriff's helicopter circled the area looking for suspects. Residents were kept from the area until authorities could ensure their safety

ments to traffic control at the intersection that have been proposed by residents," says Rogers in a memo to the council.
Complaints have claimed the existing all-way stop con- trol is insufficient to bring vehicles to a full stop prior to the crosswalk at the north leg of the intersection.
"The intersection does not meet the requirements for
a traffic signal according to a study of traffic volumes, pedestrian crossing volumes, or accident history," Rogers says in his report.
However, there are some improvements that could be made and all of them consist of additional pavement mark- ings and/or minor signage
which could be added to the intersection:
• install a high visibility ladder crosswalk across the north leg of Bethel Avenue;
• install "STOP" pavement marking legend on each lane of all approaches;
• install advance limit line on all approaches to the intersection;
• install a "STOP AHEAD" sign on westbound 5th Street; and,
• install "ALL WAY" sign below all existing STOP signs.
