Denise Hamstrom Memorial Blood Drive event on Saturday
Staff Report
Community members are en- couraged to come out and give blood at the second annual Denise Ham- strom Memorial Blood drive event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, in the parking lot next to Pizza Planet at River Walk Shopping Center.
The event is hosted by Central California Blood Center and the Reedley Area Relay for Life group, and is in honor of Denise Ham-
strom. The Reedley resident died in 2017 after a long battle with cancer but was a dedicated advocate and volunteer with Relay for Life.
Brandy McNelly with Relay for Life said the group has worked to provide donors with a coupon book that will help raise money in the fight against cancer. The coupon book will be good for a number of businesses in the River Walk Shop- ping Center and other city busi- nesses.
“ Other coupons [will] be an-
nounced as they are finalized, but the generos- ity overflows in Reedley,” McNel- ly said.
McNelly
added that Pizza
Planet is serv-
ing free cheesy
bread to donors
giving blood at the mobile unit ev- ery half hour. Anyone older than 17 years and in good health is eligible
to give bloods, and regular donors can give if eight weeks have passed since they last donated.
McNelly said the blood drive in Hamstrom’s honor is a natural.
“Denise relayed with us for many years while fighting her own personal battle with cancer,” she said. “We may not have her with us today, but we enjoyed many more days than we would have if it hadn’t been for blood transfusions and car- ing and generous people like [the community].”
The blood drive is part of mul- tiple events that Reedley Area Re- lay for Life in preparation for the annual Reedley Relay for Life. This year’s fundraising event will take place for a 24-hour period begin- ning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, at Reedley High School. Volunteers will walk and run laps around a makeshift oval in the field south of the RHS aquatics facility and west of the varsity baseball diamond.

Royal Valley demolition update

A group of two youths — founders and leaders from the Caminul Felix Village Orphanage in Ora- dea, Romania and leaders from Felix Family Village in Thailand — are stopping in Reedley on Sunday, Feb. 24, as part of a national tour.
The group will appear at at 10:30 a.m. at Full Gos- pel Tabernacle, 519 E. 11th St., in a special service. The community is invited to the service.
The Romanian orphan youth are touring America on behalf of orphaned chil- dren in Thailand who are unable to obtain visas. In Romania, it’s estimated that more than 60,000 children still lived in state orphan- ages, on the streets or in subway stations and sewer pipes in the country enter- ing new millennium.
That led to the forma- tion of Caminul Felix —
literally meaning “Happy Home.” The orphanage has been recognized as the model orphanage in Roma- nia. Children live in family units with a “mom and dad” rather than in institutional dormitories.
Each child receives the love and security of a per- manent family rather than the shift hours of over- worked and underpaid state workers. The home are bright, clean and modern. All children in the orphan- age are enrolled in school and are developing as posi- tive, responsible young people.
On the U.S. tour, the orphan youth will present a concert in English and Romanian that includes a broad variety of music — classical, gospel, and Ro- manian folk tunes. Young people also will share their individual stories.

Work continued last week on the Royal Valley packing shed demolition, expected to take another three or four weeks as demolition crews worked through bouts of rain. More precipitation was in the forecast for this week. Crews are expected to work around the weather to finish bringing the old building down. The city plans to use the site for additional parking of Reedley Police Department vehicles and city vehicles. Also, some of the land has been set aside for future expansion of the police department.

STOP SIGNS Continued from page A1
he called the most important part.
City Manager Nicole Zieba said city officials have looked into the possibility of removing some parking stalls along G Street to improve visibility. The problem with that action, she said, is that it would only complicate what’s already a difficult experience in finding parking along G Street.
In opposing the project, Fast echoed the city’s Traf- fic and Safety Commission,
which is against four-way stop signs because of what they feel would be increased traffic delays. Putting four- way stop signs at 9th and 12th Streets would mean four consecutive blocks along G Street would have traffic con- trol. There are traffic lights the intersections of G and 10th and 11th streets.
Ultimately, Mayor Frank Pinon joined the majority in favor of starting the effort to place four-way stop signs. The city now will draft a resolution asking for a council vote to ac- tually approve installing stop signs.
