Locals show up for vaccine clinic
  The View From Here
Up until a few days ago, I had never tasted orange blos- som honey.
I picked
up a jar at
Sweet Girl
Farms on the
afternoon of July 23. I went back to the popular farm stand that afternoon to get a little more video and picked up a jar of that, plus another jar of blueberry jam. Both taste amazing, and I highly recommend them.
Liset, (the Sweet Girl Farms owner) and I talked for a bit about how the farm stand is doing. She told me she feels very honored and special that so many people drive by to visit her and buy from her stand every day.
Liset has great hospital- ity. She is kind, genuine and I really feel that is why people are drawn to her.
After visiting with her for abit,Igotintomycarand headed to the Jefferson El- ementary School cafeteria in Reedley. The school was the site of a vaccine clinic.
The inside of the cafeteria was cool and comfortable, a stark difference from the hot sun beaming down my back outside.
I walked in and saw an old college friend of mine named Joseph Vasquez. Joseph is a photographer and happens to work at Cultiva La Salud.
Cultiva La Salud was host- ing the event and partnered with the Kings Canyon Uni- fied School District and the Fresno County Department of Public Health.
I took some time to speak with Genoveva Islas and Mir- iam Aleman. Genoveva is the founder and CEO of Cultiva La Salud, and Miriam is the school based health center specialist with KCUSD.
“I think there’s a really important urgency [to be vaccinated] because we are seeing the Delta Variant in Fresno County right now,” said Islas.
“What we know about the Delta variant is that it is very contagious and it has a very severe impact on people who become infected, the major- ity of the people who are hos- pitalized right now are not vaccinated.”
According to yalemedi- cine.org, the Delta Variant is a new mutation of the CO- VID-19 virus. Experts also found that those who are vaccinated appeared to have protection against the Delta variant.
I have talked to many peo- ple who are still refusing to be vaccinated for one reason or another.

being vaccinated.
“A lot of the rural commu-
nities have had lower vaccina- tion rates, a lot of that is due to the diversity of the commu- nity where folks may not have access to health insurance,” she said.
“So bringing these events, these types of mobile clinics to rural communities is really a concerted effort to try to get more people vaccinated.”
Representatives from the Kings Canyon Unified School District also added that the wait time for vaccine events ranges from 45 minutes to an hour, so they wanted to create a safe and comfortable envi- ronment while people waited

The line of people wait- ing to be vaccinated wrapped around the inside of the Jef- ferson Elementary School cafeteria on the afternoon of July 23.
“We’re having a late eve- ning vaccine event, we call it a Tardeada, because it is in the late evening,” said Genoveva Islas, founder and CEO of Cul- tiva La Salud.
“It’s meant to inspire a little fiesta, like an evening fi- esta for folks to come and feel
welcomed.”
The vaccine clinic was a
partnered effort form Cultiva La Salud, the Kings Canyon Unified School District, the Fresno County Department of Public Health and Pinnacle Training Systems.
“So along with the vaccines we have a lot of health educa- tion for people who are maybe just looking for more informa- tion on the importance of be- ing vaccinated,” Islas said.
The event included music, food and raffle prizes. Islas said they also want to mini- mize the fear that comes with
