Flu masking extended for county health care workers
Contributed
The Fresno County Department of Public Health has informed all acute care hospitals and long-term care facilities about the extension of the flu vaccine mandate and mask- ing order for the 2018-19 influenza season (fcdph.org/healthmessages).
Due to the continued elevated in- fluenza activity in the county, Mercy Kagoda, deputy health officer, is ex- tending the order for unvaccinated health care personnel to wear a mask
while they are in patient care areas until Tuesday, April 30. If influenza activity remains elevated, a further extension may be required.
On Aug. 1, 2018, the Fresno Coun- ty Health Officer designated influ- enza (flu) season for 2018-19 as Nov. 15, 2018 through March 31, 2019. Ac- cording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), flu ac- tivity is expected to remain elevated nationally through early April.
At this time, FCDPH is extending the designation of flu season through
April 30.
“It is not too late to be vacci-
nated. Influenza activity in Fresno County is still elevated. Residents should continue taking precautions to avoid getting sick,” Kagoda said. “Getting vaccinated decreases risk of severe illness.”
FCDPH recommends that every- one 6 months of age and older get a flu shot every year. The vaccine is safe and effective. It takes two weeks for immunity to develop.
Vaccination is especially impor-
tant for people who are at high risk of developing serious complications from influenza, including:
• People with chronic medical conditions, like asthma, diabetes and lung disease, even if symptoms are under control
• Pregnant women
• People 65 years and older
• People who live with or care for
others who are at higher risk
The public also should do the fol-
lowing to avoid getting sick:
• Wash hands thoroughly and often
• Use hand sanitizers
• Stay away from sick people
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose,
and mouth
• Clean commonly touched sur-
faces
• If you are sick, stay home for
at least 24 hours fever-free without treatment and avoid contact with others

Staff Report
Interested Reedley resi- dents are invited to apply for an recently-opened seat on the Reedley Planning Com- mission.
The seat became open with the resignation of Com- missioner Dawn Barcel- los, who stepped down last month after five years on the board.
The commission consists of five members, all of whom are Reedley residents and not elected officials. Com- missioners are appointed by the mayor with the approval of the City Council.
The commission is re- sponsible for approving — or recommending approval to the City Council — of vari- ous entitlement applications
submitted to the Planning Division of the city’s Com- munity Development Depart- ment. Meeting are scheduled for the first Thursday of each month as well as on an “as needed” basis the third Thursday of each month.
City officials say serv- ing on the commission is a great opportunity to be en- gaged with the public, and provide input on develop- ment projects throughout the community.
Persons interested in ap- plying for the position can do so by requesting a Commis- sion Application form and/or additional information from the City Clerk’s office. For more information, email to sylvia.plata@reedley.ca.gov or call (559) 637-4200, Ext. 212.
