Reedley blows big lead, then rallies to edge Sunnyside in 8

Reedley High almost gave away its spot atop the North Yosemite League soft- ball standings, but turned the tables just in time to remain unbeaten in league play.
After blowing a six-run lead after one inning and trailing by two runs after five, the Pirates (11-6, 4-0) rallied for single runs in the sixth and seventh, then pushed across another run in the eighth for a thrilling 10- 9 victory over the Sunnyside High Wildcats.
Reedley held a one-game lead over Hoover (a 9-6 loser to McLane on April 4) head- ing into an April 9 showdown with the Patriots in Fresno. Results were unavailable at press time.
The Pirates jumped on Sunnyside (9-8, 2-2) in the first inning when Emma Mulligan doubled off the fence in center and scored on a wild pitch Aryanna Gon- zalez belted a two-run homer while Stephanie Castro and Jackie Gutierrez delivered RBI hits and an error plated another run. But the Wild- cats roared back with three runs in the second, one in the
third and five in the fourth for the 9-7 lead before RHS countered with the decisive rally.
Mulligan finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, two walks and three runs scored while Lauren Cuevas went 3-for- 4 with two doubles. Castro picked up the pitching vic- tory with five innings of four- hit relief while going 2-for-4 with a double.
Four different players collected two hits apiece for Reedley in a 16-1 rout of McLane on April 2. Mulligan went 2-for-4 with an inside- the-park home run and a double, Gonzalez was 2-for- 3 with a homer and double, Castro went 2-for-3 with a triple while Jocelyn Diaz also went 2-for-3.
Hannah Medina picked up the pitching win, working four innings allowing one un- earned run while striking out six and yielding four hits.
Reedley begins round two of NYL play on Friday, April 12, with a 3:30 p.m. home game against Roosevelt. The Pirates then open play in the Tulare Varsity Tournament on Saturday, April 13, facing Lemoore (noon, Tulare West- ern High School) and Porter- ville (4 p.m., Tulare Union High School).
Tournament play con- cludes Monday, April 15, with matchups to be deter- mined by Saturday's results.

Reedley High's Oscar Lemus fired a pitch to the plate against Roosevelt hitter Samuel Hernandez in the second inning of a North Yosemite League game on April 15. Lemus struck out Hernandez, one of seven for the senior righthander in a 10-1 victory.

Pirates' offensive outburst turns tables on 0-2 league start Staff Report
Reedley High made a quick recov- ery from an 0-2 start in North Yosem- ite League play, racking up a pair of double-digit wins against the Roosevelt Roughriders last week.
The Pirates (10-5, 2-2) pounded out six extra base hits and used a standout pitching performance from junior Nick Torres to pound Roosevelt by an 11-0 score in Fresno on April 4, two days after the scheduled contest was post- poned by rain. On April 5 at Reedley High diamond, the Pirates never looked back after a three-run first inning in a 10-1 rout. Reedley went for its third straight NYL win on April 9 at home against McLane. Results were unavail- able at press time.
Torres struck out six and scattered two hits in the win at Roosevelt. Tristan Garza doubled and tripled while going 2-for-3 while Justin Rackley doubled and stole three bases. Ryan Garza dou- bled and drove in two runs while Jacob Franco and Ryan Warkentin collected doubles.
In the April 5 home win, Oscar Le- mus struck out seven and kept Roos- evelt's bats quiet throughout the game. Meanwhile, Reedley's hitting surge con- tinued with Justin Rackley tripling while Jacob Franco and Chris Hinojosa rapped out doubles. Will Gagnon delivered a two-run single in the first as the Pirates quickly seized command of the game.
The Pirates play McLane in the road end of a home-and-home at 3:30 p.m. Fri- day, April 12, in Fresno. Reedley then opens play in the Fresno Easter Classic

reunion set for May 18

Reedley College vol- leyball players from 1974 to 1995 who played under longtime coach Shirley Gustafson are invited to a reunion from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, in the Reedley College cafeteria.
Players, family, friends and the public are invited to help honor "Mrs. Gus."

ship game will be played that evening at Clovis West High School.

With two more weeks left in the regular season, the Reedley College Tiger softball team re- mained in a tie for first place in the Central Valley Conference with the College of the Sequoias Giants.
Reedley faced Porterville on April 9 in the Lady Tigers’ fi- nal regular season home games. Sophomores Emily Grimbleby, Mariah Hernandez, Aunika Cas- tellanos and Sandra Vallejo were honored before the doubleheader at RC diamond. The Tigers travel to Ridgecrest to face Cerro Coso on Thursday, April 11, before fac- ing Merced on the road in a Tues- day, April 16, twinbill and going to Fresno City to close out the regular season on Thursday, April 18.

At this writing, Reedley is ranked 14th in the state and sev- enth in Northern California.
The Tigers went 3-2 last week, splitting a doubleheader with Se- quoias on April 2 at home, winning the opener 4-3 and dropping the nightcap 2-0. Reedley needed eight innings to pull out a 3-2 home win over Taft College on April 4.
In a non-conference twinbill in Aptos against Cabrillo College on April 5, Reedley needed nine in- nings to win the opener 4-2 before falling 6-5 in the second game.
A three-run homer off the bat of Castellanos proved to be the difference in the first game with Sequoias before being held to four hits in the second game.
Reedley battled back from a 2-0 deficit to down Taft. After tying the game with an RBI double in the
sixth, a single by Patty Hernandez scored Vallejo with the winning run in the eighth.
BASEBALL Tigers run win streak to five games
Reedley College’s baseball team took a five-game winning streak into the start of a three- game series with Central Valley Conference leader College of the Sequoias Giants this week.
The series began in Visalia on April 9 before a 2 p.m. game in Reedley on Thursday, April 11, and a 1 p.m. contest in Visalia on Saturday, April 13.
During Easter break, Reedley hosts Bakersfield College on Tues- day, April 16, before going to Ba- kersfield the next day.
