teams
MVT Staff Report
League openers loom on the horizon next week for the Reedley High and Sanger High water polo teams.
The Pirates' teams had two more non- league games this week. The boys (9-4) and girls (6-2) traveled to Kingsburg for eve- ning contests on Sept. 14, then hosted Golden West on Sept. 15.
Reedley hosts Fres- no in the North Yosem- ite League opener on Tuesday, Sept. 21. with the boys match at 5:30 p.m. and the girls at 6:30. The Pirate boys went 2-2 at the Sunny- side Tournament last weekend, dropping a 17-9 decision on Sept. 11 to Sanger High, while the girls had a four-match win streak snapped in a 13-5 loss at home against Tulare Western on Sept. 9.

Sanger High running back Ashton Rodriguez claws for yardage during the Apaches'14-13 overtime loss at Lemoore High on Sept. 10. Rodriguez scored Sanger's touchdown in overtime.

The Sanger High Apach- es and Lemoore High Tigers football teams engaged in an old-fashioned defensive struggle on Sept. 10 at LHS Tigers Stadium. And in a game that needed a few ex- tra plays to be decided, the Apaches came up a yard short from pulling out a non- league road victory.
After yielding an open- ing touchdown in overtime, Sanger answered back with a rushing touchdown by Ashton Rodriguez. But on the game-deciding two-point attempt, Lemoore stopped the senior running back just short of the goalline and es- caped with a 14-13 comeback victory. It was Sanger's sev- enth overtime football game
in school history, the last coming at the same location in a 40-38 victory over Lem- oore in 2017.
Returning to action after a week off because of some positive COVID-19 tests and contact tracing, the Apaches needed just two possessions

Sanger High hosts Centennial High on Friday, Sept. 17, for Hall of Fame Night at Tom Flores Stadium. The Apaches' Class of 2020 HOF inductees will be honored at 7 p.m, with the 2021 Class honored at halftime. In addition, Flores is scheduled to make an appearance.
Pirates strong, but weather forces no contest
Reedley builds 24-7 lead as lightning ends game at half, Dinuba wins at El Diamante
MVT Staff Report
The Reedley High football team was well on its way to a 4-0 start to the 2021 fall season, but Mother Nature had other ideas.
Flashes of lightning and thunder that swept through eastern Fresno and Tulare counties mid- evening on Sept. 9 closed in on the Reedley area, causing the non-league contest to be suspended at halftime with the Pi- rates leading Mendota High by a 24-7 score. The game ultimately was canceled and de- clared a no-contest.
Up to the suspension, Pirates senior running back Ryan Warkentin was turning in a phenom-
enal performance. He closed the first quarter with an 87-yard touch- down dash, and after adding a 4-yard scoring run early in the second quarter he closed out the half with a 37-yard TD reception.
Warkentin's first-half stats were 184 rushing and 245 total yards. The other Reedley points came on a field goal by Fernando Garcia.
Since Mendota has a game scheduled for Reedley's bye week Sept. 24, the game will not be completed or made up.
The Pirates return to action Friday, Sept. 17, at Selma High in a 7:30

Reedley High's Ryan Warkentin raced for a long touchdown to end the first quarter, one of two touchdowns he scored on the final play of the quarter. The senior had an 87-yard touchdown run, a 4-yard TD run and 37-yard scoring reception to end the first half and give Reedley a 24-7 lead. The game was suspended at halftime because of lightning, and ultimately was ruled a no-contest.
