Fresno officer-involved shooting kills Orange Cove man
MVT Staff Report
Law enforcement shot and killed a 36-year-old Orange Cove man who attempted to ram them while driving a sto- len vehicle in southeast Fres- no on July 7.
According to the Fresno County Sheriff's Office, a California Highway Patrol of- ficer and FCSO deputy fatally shot Carlos Baires as he sped toward a sheriff's detective's vehicle in a third attempt to ram the vehicle.
The incident began shortly after 12:30 p.m. when detec- tives with the Fresno HEAT (Help Eliminate Auto Theft) task force approached a sto- len vehicle driven by Baires in a parking lot near Ventura Avenue and Hazelwood Bou- levard. Vehicles attempted to box in Baires, but he reverse out of the parking lot and rammed a detective's vehicle.
At that time, a woman who was a passenger in the stolen vehicle managed to safely leave the vehicle. Detectives
Carlos Baires
surrounded the car and gave Baires commands to surrender. Instead, the suspect sped through the lot and rammed a vehicle again. It was then
gan efforts to revive him. An ambulance transported Baires to the hospital, where he died.
Baires was released from prison earlier this year, ac- cording to the sheriff's office. He was sentenced in 2016 as a result of a HEAT investiga- tion. Charges were auto theft, evading, etc. At the time of the shooting, he was a parolee at large and had an active bench warrant for drug possession.
Additionally, Baires cur- rently had an active warrant out of the Dinuba Police De-
partment. The warrant was for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon (not a firearm) and carjacking.
This OIS remains an ongo- ing investigation, which is be- ing conducted by the Fresno Police Department. If anyone has information, photos or videos that can help detec- tives with this case, contact Fresno Police at (559) 621- 2456. Tipsters also can con- tact Valley Crime Stoppers at (559) 498-7867 or valley- crimestoppers.org.

fought back, pushing Christopher out onto the front porch. From there, the man delivered sever- al strikes to Christopher and severely injured him. He then called the sheriff's office to report
the incident.
The early evidence
showed that Christo- pher was upset with the man over a woman they both have been involved with. As of July 14, no arrests had been made in the case.
The sheriff's office said the case remains
an outstanding investi- gation. Anyone who may have additional informa- tion is asked to contract Det. Adrian Villegas at (559) 600-8210 or call Crime Stoppers at (559) 498-7867. Tipsters will remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
