Screening of the docu- mentary “Josiah.” Pre- sented by the Reedley Peace Center. It is about Josiah Henson, a forgot- ten hero of the Abolish- ionist Movement and the
courage reporting, 57 percent; assemblies, 39 percent; teach- ing lessons, 31 percent; don’t know, 31 percent; nothing, 5 percent; and 3 percent gave no response. Carousso said it was notable that many parents say the district encourages report- ing incidents of bullying, and that was consistent in the dif- ferent grade levels. She said it also was good that fewer parents responded “nothing.”
“But again, we still have about a third who really don’t know what we do about it,” Ca- rousso told the board.
“That just means we still have more work to do with communicating about what we want to do to support our students who are experienc- ing bullying.”
She said KCUSD adding 32 mental health workers in the past five years has been significant, but more work still needs to be done to ad- dress the issue: “We have just got to keep at it.”
• “What can be done to continue providing a safe school environment?” – Par- ents could give two answers. Districtwide, the responses were this: increase supervi- sion, 42 percent; services to support troubled students, 35 percent; create ways for students to report issues, 34 percent; add security camer- as, 30 percent; remove repeat offenders, 25 percent; and 3 percent gave no response.
• “Does your student have access to technology (com- puter, tablet, internet) outside of school?” – Carousso de- scribed the striking increase that’s happened since just 2016. Districtwide, 77 percent of parents said their children

now had access at home, com- pared to 55 percent two years ago. In the specific group for grades kindergarten through fifth, for example, 73 percent of parents said so, compared to 49 percent in 2016.
Carousso credited the increase to the Puente a Tec- nologia program (Bridge to Technology) that’s in its sec- ond year in KCUSD. The pro- gram provides a Chromebook with built-in Wi-Fi to English language learners and their families so that learning con- tinues at home.
• “How well does school communicate about how to ob- tain counseling and guidance regarding college admission and career planning?” – This query was aimed only for parents with sixth- to 12th- graders. This one produces lower marks for the district. Districtwide, KCUSD rated excellent, 16 percent; good, 8 percent; fair, 19 percent; poor, 38 percent; do not know, 19 percent; 41 percent gave no response.
“We still need to work on this one. This is probably the only place that we get a poor rating,” Carousso said. “We just need to continue to do more and do it earlier. I think our parents want to know so much.”
• By a vast margin, 77 percent of parents said they expect their students, after high school graduation, to at- tend a four-year university.
• By far, at 69 percent, parents preferred three weeks of winter vacation. Also, by a wide gap at 64 percent, par- ents want the school dress code kept as is.
($15 on the day of the show). A limited number of VIP (“Very Important Princess”) and Birthday VIP tickets also are available.
