ere have been many songs written and sung describing how we need
other people. Two of the songs I remember are Barbara Streisand’s, “People who need people”, and Bill With- ers, “Lean on Me”. e lyrics are heart felt and describe how lucky people are who need people and that this is something we should strive for.
Bill Withers song “Lean on Me” describes
the importance of helping those in need because someday we
all will need help from someone else. One of the lines in this song is, “it won’t be long, till I’m gonna need somebody to lean on.”
How true this is for seniors entering their retirement years. Fam- ily and friends can lend a hand, medical profes-
sionals can prescribe treatment and care giv- ers, whether family or paid sta , can provide the daily care that will be needed for 50 – 70% of seniors.
One of the many good things that happens ev- eryday at Palm Village Retirement Community in Reedley, are senior residents helping and welcoming other senior
residents on a daily basis. Help could come in the form of a hug, a pleasant conversation,
a direction or two or just being with another resident between or during the many on and o campus activities. Social interactions take place through activi- ties, games, meal time, chapel services or trips to local and distance destinations.
All these activities provide ample opportu- nity for seniors to enjoy being together. Living in a community of se- niors of similar age and life experiences, creates comradery and new friendships which can promote good health and a sense of wellbe- ing.
