Fast start propels Dinuba's fth win

A five-run outburst in the first inning aided the Dinuba High base- ball team to their fifth win of the season in a 8-3 win over Sierra Pa- cific Saturday night.
The Emperors (5-2) were led of- fensively by shortstop Jesse Orte- ga, who went 4-for-4 while almost
hitting for the cycle with a triple, double and a single. Ortega also drove in three runs. Teammates Sid Chavarrin and Armando Mejia each had a pair of RBI’s.
Michael Gomez pitched four in- nings allowing four hits with two strikeouts.
In a 9-1 win over Madera South, the pitching combination of Isaiah
Ochoa and Ortega held the Stallions to three hits.
Dinuba scored four runs in the top of the third and sixth innings. Josh Meave had two hits to go along with 3 RBI’s and scored three runs while Justin Gonzalez and Mejia each recorded two hits and two RBI’s.

Immanuel High split its first two games in the West Coast baseball tournament, losing at home to Firebaugh High and then traveling to the Central Coast to defeat Mission Prep.
The Eagles (3-2) traveled to Madera for a March 3 game against Liberty High (results were unavailable at press time). They close out that tournament on Thursday, March 5, in a 3:30 p.m. start at The Yard against an oppo- nent to be determined by results of the Liberty game.
Immanuel suffered its second loss in three home games this sea- son when Firebaugh
prevailed 7-4 on Feb. 26. It was the most runs al- lowed by the IHS pitch- ing staff in 2020.
The Eagles bounced back against Mission Prep, getting a stellar pitching performance from Matt Tiger who improved to 2-0 on the season. The senior scat- tered just one hit in six inning, striking out 12 without walking a bat- ter. Ryan Friesen went 2-for-4 with a double while Nevyn Santillan was 2-for-4 as Immanuel finished with 10 hits.
Immanuel opens Central Sequoia League play on Tuesday, March 10, with a 7 p.m. contest at Kingsburg High. The Eagles’ CSL home open- er will be on Tuesday, March 17, vs. Exeter.

The Sanger Apaches’ varsity boys’ basketball season came to an end on Feb. 25 after suffering a nine-point loss, 70-61, to No. 1 Bakersfield Chris- tian in the semifinals of the Central Section’s Di- vision 3 playoffs.
Sanger High shoot- ing guard Jon Dillon put in a valiant effort against the Eagles, scoring 23 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to cut into a 19-point halftime deficit. The sophomore Apache shot 10 of 15 (67 percent) from the field while making both attempts from beyond the arc. He also finished with four rebounds and was the only Apache to score in double figures.

Jesse Piceno scored nine points by making all three of his 3-point shots. Also playing in their final game for Sanger High were Alejandro Mend- ibles and Joe LeBeau, both of whom finished with six points against BCHS.
As for the Eagles, led by junior shooting guard Lendi Henderson, Jr., who scored 21 points against the Apaches, the team went on to beat Hoover, 62-44, in the sec- tion championship game on Feb. 28 at Selland Arena. Hoover, the No. 3 team, upset No. 2 Garces Memorial, 75-64, in their semifinals matchup af- ter defeating Dinuba High, 52-44 on Feb. 20.
The Apaches finished the season with a 17-14 overall record.

The Orange Cove High girls softball team defeated Parlier, 12- 1, to capture the inaugural Orosi Cardinal/Orange Cove Titan Bash Saturday in Orosi.
Pitcher, Mary Joe Camaquin, pitched an outstanding game fir-
ing a three-hitter. The Lady Titan defense played solid defensively behind Mia Venezuela, Anahi Cas- tillo, and Alex Lozano.
The whole team contributed for our success, stated coach Victor Contreras.
OCHS had also defeated Corcor- an (8-6), Farmersville (7-4) and tied
Parlier (7-7).

were Camaquin, Venezuela, Cas- tillo. Parlier’s Isabelle Gonzales, Jazzmen Cisneros and Alyiah Gar- cia. Orosi’s Carla Torres and Leslie Segura and representing Immanuel were Mia Barbosa and Faith Beck- enhauer.

Dinuba High senior wrestler Noah Cortez is named Athlete of the Week as the Cal Poly signee wrapped up an outstanding prep career. Cortez nished sixth overall at 152 pounds in the CIF State Wrestling Championships held in Bakers eld.

Reedley High’s Diana Hoffman swam the breaststroke portion of the varsity girls 200-yard individual medley during a dual meet against Tulare Western on Feb. 27 at the RHS Aquatics Complex. Hoffman won the race in 2 minutes, 33.53 seconds. The Pirates will host Tulare schools Tulare Union on Tuesday, March 10, and Mission Oak High on Thursday, March 12. Meets start at 4 p.m.
