During the 24 years I have worked at
Palm Village Retire- ment Community, I have seen men and women experience retirement in di erent ways. While the main
focus is typically on retirement income and investments, the issue of providing and need- ing care, tends to a ect women di erently than men.
e primary way seniors receive care
all around the world,
is from the oldest daughter in the fam- ily. Women are usually the primary care givers for young children and this continues when their parents need care. e person the family looks to when
a senior needs care, is
the oldest daughter. Next, other daughters are asked and third, daughters-in-law are sought out. Sons are usually expected to help only when all the others cannot for one reason or another. is is a common pattern in society today.
It is the adult daugh- ters of seniors who often provide care to their parents either
in their own home or their parents home. ese women are often still involved with their own families in a
variety of ways. Many work full time, and are now providing care for their aging parents in addition to their exist- ing responsibilities.
It is not uncommon to hear a woman say, “I quit my job, took a leave of absence, re- tired early or reduced my work schedule or sold my business to be able to care for one or both of her parents.” Many are happy to
do this but it impacts their life.
If the care needed is minor and for a short
time, things may work out well. If the care needed is signi cant, involves lifting or dementia is involved and 24 hour, seven day a week care is needed, this can be too much to expect any person to manage alone.
Daughters are often happy to help their parents with care and every family situation is di erent. It is only when care becomes too much or lasts too long that the one providing care can become at rick for their own health.
ere are many op- tions for seniors need- ing care and it doesn’t have to all fall to one person. Paid sta can come to your home or a senior can move to Assisted Living where care is provided round the clock.
If there is a senior in your family that needs care and is still living at home, have a fam- ily meeting and make a plan that suits your family the best.

3 tips to overcome everyday aches and pains
Pain is a signi cant con- cern for many people. Esti- mates from the International Association for the Study of Pain suggest that one in ve adults across the globe su er from pain.
Pain can a ect anyone, even people who have not been in an accident or suf- fered an injury while play-
ing a sport or performing another physical activity.
For example, lower back pain, which can be caused
by sitting at a desk for long stretches of time, is the most common type of chronic pain in the United States. Such pain may be unavoid- able, but that does not mean it and other types of everyday
aches and pains cannot be overcome.
1. Begin a well-rounded exercise regimen.
Regular exercise that includes both strength training and cardiovascular exercise increases blood ow and helps build a strong core. A strong core supports the spine and reduces the pressure on it, making it less likely people who sit for long stretches at a time will end their days with lower back pain. Routine exercise also helps other areas of the body by keeping muscles loose and exible. Before beginning a new exercise regimen, men

and women, especially those with existing aches and pains, should consult their physi- cians about which exercises
they should do and which they might want to avoid.
2. Employ RICE.
RICE, which stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation, can help men and women overcome the aches and pains that result as the body ages and tendons begin
to lose some of their elastic- ity. RICE might be most helpful for people who have been diagnosed with tendini- tis. Athletes over 40 who en- gage in activities that require repetitive motion might need
