KCUSD's expulsion numbers show a slight increase

Data presented during the July 23 Kings Canyon Unified School District board meeting showed expulsion numbers for the district increased slighlty from the previous year.
A total of 46 recommen- dations for expulsions were made during the 2018-2019 year, up by five points from the previous year's number of 41.

Rosa Alvarez
Rosa Montufar Alva- rez of Sanger died July 22. She was 93.
Mrs. Alvarez worked as a caretaker for Fres- no County.
She is survived by one son, one daughter, two sisters, 17 grand- children, 31 great- grandchildren and five great-great-grandchil- dren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m.with a wake service at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at Wallin's Parlier Funeral Home. A chapel service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at the funeral home.
Raymond Carrillo
Raymond K. Carrillo of Reedley died July 27. He was 75.
Mr. Carrillo worked as a labor contractor.
He is survived by his wife Rosie Carrillo, one son, one daughter and three grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at the old St. An- thony of Padua Catholic Church in Reedley.
Judith Marie Figueroa
Judith Marie
Figueroa of Dinuba died July 24 in Palo Alto. She was 9.
Miss Figueroa was a student.
Reporting requirements such as these are mandated by law in the State of Cali- fornia and district officials said it is always the goal of KCUSD to maintain a "safe and nurturing environment to ensure social and emo- tional success."
The statistics include: the number of suspensions, ex- pulsions, the locations of the incidents, the grade, numbers affected and the proactive programs that are helping stu-
dents facing challenges. According to the report, from the year 2012 to present, there have been a significant higher number of students who have had only one "out of school" suspension compared to those who have have multi- ple out of school suspensions. The report indicates that during the 2017-2018 year, 556 students created the 781 out of school suspension incidents. Of that number, 409 received one suspension while 147 re-
ceived multiple suspensions. This year's numbers also showed more males (39) than females (7) were recommend-
ed for expulsion.
Similar to last year, His-
panic students made up the majority when it came to expulsion data. A total of 36 Hispanic students were rec- ommended for expulsion while 10 Caucasian students made the list. And, also like last year, the Reedley High School campus saw the high-
est number of expulsion rates throughout the district.
Data also showed top of- fenses for suspension and ex- pulsions. The highest number being students showing up to school while under the influ- ence. That number was 20 of- fenses.

Fernando Fitchett of Armona died July 22 in Salinas. He was 58.
Mr. Fitchett worked as a truck driver.

Miguel Maldonado Jr. Miguel Angel Maldo-
nado Jr. of Visalia died July 23. He was 18.
Mr. Maldonado was born and raised in Reed- ley.
He is survived by his father, Miguel Mal- donado Sr.; mother, Sara Martinez; three broth- ers and four sisters.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thurs- day, Aug. 1, at Reedley Mennonite Brethren Church. Funeral will be at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, at Reedley Mennonite Brethren Church.
Orman Parmenter
Orman W. Parmenter
of Squaw Valley died Ju- ly 24 in Fresno. He was 67.
Mr. Parmenter worked as a farm man- ager.
He is survived by his wife Priscilla R. Parmenter, one son, one daughter, one sister and four grandchildren.
Private services were scheduled.
Debbie Ruminson
Debbie C. Ruminson of Dinuba died July 19 in Los Angeles. She was 62.
Mrs. Ruminson worked as an office manager.
She is survived by one son, one daugh- ter, one sister and five grandchildren.
Private services were scheduled.
Danny Watson
Danny Watson of Dinuba died July 21 in Visalia. He was 46.
Mr. Watson worked as a production worker. He is survived by his
parents, three sisters and one brother.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. with a rosary at 6 p.m. Fri- day, Aug. 9 at St. Cath- erine of Siena Catholic Church in Dinuba. A mass will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 at St. Catherine Church. Buri- al will follow at Smith Mountain Cemetery in Dinuba.

Adrian, Reuben and Winton are just three of the special dogs from Sanger's Animal Shelter hoping for a forever home you'll get to meet at the Sanger National Night Out from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, in Sanger Park.
There will also be public safety and crime prevention tips, police and fire depart- ment demonstrations, raffle prizes and food and drink booths at the National Night Out in
the park.

Casimir (Mick) Brunswick
Casimir (Mick) Brunswick of Reedley passed away on July 25, 2019. He was 96 years old. Mick served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He worked for General Telephone Company, later Verizon for 30 years.
He was preceded in death by wife, Eunice, and wife, Natalie. Surviving him is his wife Evelyn, two daughters, Teresa (Terrie) and Cynthia (Cindy), four grandchildren, and four great grandchildren, soon to be ve.
Services will be held in the lounge at the Terraces at Sierra View Homes on Friday, August 2, at 11:00 a.m.
