VOLLEYBALL Pirates, Emperors drop openers
Reedley and Dinuba both lost their opening volleyball matches of the season on Aug. 17. The Pirates dropped a 3-2 decision against Golden West at Grant Middle School, losing three straight after taking the first two sets.
The Emperors, meanwhile, dropped straight-set non-league matches to Bullard (Aug. 17) and Tulare Westen (Aug. 19). Di- nuba hosted Reedley on Aug. 24 in a "Battle of the Students Sec- tions" matchup. Re- sults were unavailable at press time.
Last week, Sanger High opened the season by defeating Central High on Aug. 18 before losing at Clovis High on Aug. 19. The Apaches played at Kingsburg on Aug. 24.

At Sanger, the Apach- es were overpowered by Clovis High in a 35-12 loss to the Cougars while in Clovis the Emperors ral- lied late from a 15-point deficit before coming up short by a 33-30 score against Clovis East.
Warkentin shredded the Hanford West de- fense on scoring runs of
4,53,42and9yardsin his 21 carry night. His 42-yard scoring dash in the third quarter gave the hosts some breath- ing room from their 21- 14 halftime lead.
The Reedley defense stepped up in the final quarter with scoring plays. First, Abraham Soto picked off a Hus- kies pass and returned it 30 yards for a touch- down, and after Warken- tin's final rush touch- down Ceasar Guzman picked up an HW fum- ble and raced 48 yards down the sideline for the night's final score.

After Johnson and Vi- au hooked up on a 70-yard scoring play on the first drive of the game, Sanger came back with a drive field by big runs from quarterback Josaiah Du- arte and running back Jacob Gonzalez to move it to the Clovis 22. The drive stalled, and a fourth down pass into the end zone was intercepted by Carlos Mack.
Clovis then broke the game open, getting scoring runs of 1 and 15 yards from Risley to close out the quarter, and just before halftime Johnson and Viau teamed up on a 15-yard TD.
Sanger finally got on the board in the third quarter when Duarte connected with Markie Botello for a 31-yard touchdown on 4th and 7. The Apaches' other touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by running back Ashton Rodriguez.
Clovis East 33, Dinuba 30
At Lamonica Stadium, the Emperors were play- ing from behind all the way but rallied within a field goal at the end.
Sebastian Olivera rushed for 84 yards and two touchdowns, Casi- miro Barrigan threw for 117 yards and a pair of touchdowns while Mi- chael Olvera had 63 re- ceiving yards including the two TD catches.
Defensively, Herb Denny had five tackles and a fumble recovery while Brandon Guido added four tackles and a forced fumble.
Orosi 38, Woodlake 26
At Woodlake, the Cardinals compiled 405 rushing yards – 235 on 13 carries includ- ing three touchdowns by sophomore running back Andrew Camarillo — to overpower the Ti- gers. Senior quarterback Aaron Barragan added 64 yards and one touch- down on the ground.
