of the river, and embers apparently drifted across the river and set off the dry brush along the banks just below the property line for the Reed- ley Cemetery. Supporting firefighter units stood just outside the cemetery grounds hosing down the burning veg- etation below.
This is at least the second fire to have ignited along the banks of the Kings River in Reedley this spring and summer.
Back on May 5, a brush fire brief- ly burned along the west bank of the river south of the Wakehouse grill and restaurant. That blaze burned brush and some logs on the island area that was exposed before the summer sea- son water run began.

collapse several years ago, leading to raw sew- age spilling out onto the streets.
"Our city staff have been pursuing fund- ing for the replacement of the remaining line, and we are thrilled that the senator listened to us about the need, and fought to get us the funding."
In a news statement, Hurtado said she asked District 14 residents and local governments to submit budget requests to her office. In turn, she urged her legislative col- leagues and Gov. Gavin Newsom to fund these projects.
Hurtado called the approved items a "drop in the bucket" for the needs in the district. She cited instances of families going without running water in their homes.
"Several communi- ties will benefit from this budget, but until all of the communities receive adequate fund- ing—Senate District 14 is not whole,” she said.
Reedley Mayor Mary Fast also praised Hurta- do's work in securing the funding.

“Rural cities in the Central Valley are of- ten left behind by Sac- ramento, but the senator has made sure that we have a voice up there," she said. "This $2.8 mil-
lion is necessary to re- pair and upgrade an important asset for modern life as we know it. Hearing about the Lemoore water tank explosion last week makes me realize how important these water and sewer systems are to our community.”
Other funding pushed by Furtado includes $2 million for a community center in Avenal in Kings County, $750,000 for a new fire engine in Farm- ersville in Tulare County, and $120,000 in saving for the city of Shafter in Kern County.
