Rosemary Luzania and Pete Perez. Voting "no" were Chair Ron Hudson and Commissioner Wil- liam Conrad.
The meeting drew more than 25 people, easily the largest turn- out since the City Coun- cil and commission meetings have been held during the COVID-19 pandemic. The majority of residents attending voiced their opposition
to the beer-wine permit during public comment. Clarissa Mitchell,
speaking for the owners of City Market, said the lack of a permit to sell beer and wine "has af- fected our sales signifi- cantly." Reps also said that customers have elected to leave with- out purchasing any food items without the op- portunity to buy beer or wine.
But the next seven speakers said that the concentration of busi- nesses selling alcohol has led to trash, drunken behavior, and other neg- atives to the surround- ing neighborhood. One resident, Frank Felipe, said his yard has been a constant target of trash, people sleeping in the al- ley-way and lack of room for delivery trucks.
The council's sched- uled June meetings are June 9 and June 23.
