Garden Checklist: check drainage around plants
Contributed
The Garden Check- list is filled with tips and tricks for local gar- deners who wish to keep their greenery, flowers, and herbs looking beau- tiful all year long.
The bumps on oak tree foliage and branch- es are galls caused by minute cynipid wasps that do not harm people or the trees.
Tasks for this time of year include mowing cool-weather lawns.
Check and improve drainage around plants in low areas. Add fallen leaves, chipping trim- mings and garden debris to compost.
Remember that
plants in containers or beds under covered areas may not receive adequate water from rainfall and may require supplemental irrigation in fall and winter.
When pruning, dis- pose of diseased wood by discarding in the trash.
When fertilizing, feed cool-weather plants and vegetables. Add bulb fertilizer to planting hole before planting bulbs.
When planting, re- member that tulip and hyacinth bulbs that have been chilled for 6 weeks may be planted now.
Sow wildflowers or grasses on hillsides to prevent erosion in heavy rains.
Perennials: coral bells (Heuchera).
Bulbs, corms, tubers: Hyacinthus orientalis.
Fruits and vegeta- bles: cabbage, peas, spin- ach, plant from seed.
Annuals: toadflax (Linaria maroccana), stock (Matthiola incana). Trees, shrubs, vines: In- dian hawthorne (Rhaphi- olepsis).
Enjoy these now, an- nuals and perennials: stock (Matthiola) Afri- can daisy (Osteosper- mum).
Fruit and vegetables: Asian pears, chard, nec- tarines, peas, peppers.
Trees, shrubs, vines: holly (Ilex), Chinese fringe flower (Loropeta- lum), Nandina.
Fall color: crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica), sweet gum (Liq- uidambar).

Fresno County Health Department still apply.
“We must have ev- eryone self certify be- fore they come onto campus,” she said.
“This is part of Fresno County Health Department’s require- ments, so if we had to do a trace, we need to pull very quickly who was on campus and
what their symptoms were.”
In all, Delport said that of the 6,000 stu- dents enrolled at one of the schools in the dis- trict, 1,000 of them re- main on distance educa- tion learning.
The district superin- tendent, John Campbell said they look forward to the day when they can return their 7th through 12th grade stu- dents.
