The elimination of the Fresno State wrestling program after the 2020- 2021 season means two Dinuba High products on the roster will have to look for new schools to wrestle for in their senior years, or this year if they so choose.
On Oct. 16, the univer- sity announced in video media conference that wrestling along with men’s tennis and lacrosse will be discontinued after the 2020-21 academic year. The athletic department expects an overall annual budget savings of approxi- mately $2.5 million, once all scholarships and other contractual obligations have been fulfilled. That
will leave the university with 18 NCAA Division I sports (six men’s and 12 women’s sports), serving approximately 430 student- athletes.
“Today’s decision is difficult for everyone and yet it is a necessary step to ensure the financial viabil- ity of our athletics depart- ment,” President Joseph I. Castro said on Oct. 16. “We appreciate those who have supported these Bulldogs programs over the years, including coaches, current and former student-ath- letes, and their families.”
Because of the CO- VID-19 pandemic, Fresno State Athletics faced an operating deficit of $6.6 million, more than $4 mil- lion above the university’s usual operating deficit.
The university said all 70 student-athletes affect- ed by the cuts will be pro- vided financial assistance, and would assist any ath- letes deciding to transfer. Student-athletes of those sports who choose to re- main at Fresno State will continue to receive aca- demic support and other student services.
Fresno State’s two wrestlers from Dinuba High — Jacob Wright and Isaiah Perez — are both redshirt juniors. they can choose to stay and com- pete for the Bulldogs as juniors, or can transfer and be granted immediate eligibility to future schools.
Wright, the son of for- mer Emperors coach Mi- chael Wright, has posted a 51-25 career record in

two-plus seasons with the Bulldogs; highlighted by a 24-9 finish and fifth place finish at 157 pounds at the Big 12 Championship in 2019-20. He qualified for the NCAA Champonships, earning the No. 25 seed, before the tournament was canceled by COVID-19. He is a criminology major.
Isaiah Perez
Perez went 12-4 in 2019- 20 competing at 133 and 141 pounds unattached. He transferred to Fresno State from Fresno City College, where he twice won the Community College State Title in his weight class earned All-American sta- tus. He is majoring in ki- nesiology.

After months of anticipation, the Fresno State football team will finally be hitting the gridiron when they host the University of Hawaii this Saturday. For three local prodi- gies, the game represents a unique opportunity as three former Apaches will be on the field for the Bulldogs.
Fresno State senior linebacker Arron Mosby, sophomore wide receiver Jalen Cropper and true freshman Kosi Agina all spent their high school prep careers at Sanger High (Cropper played his senior year at Buchanan High in Clovis).
Saturday's game is scheduled to kick off at 4:30 p.m.
