The Fresno County mountain neighborhood of Miramonte-Pinehurst last week became the first recognized FireWise Community in Fresno Coun- ty, as a group of cooperating neigh- bors received their Certification of Recognition this week from National FireWise USA, a program of the Na- tional Fire Protection Association.
FireWise communities work to- gether to plan and take steps to pro- tect their neighborhood from wildfire by hardening their homes and reduc- ing vegetation on their properties.
Volunteers through the office of Rep Jim Patterson, Oak to Timber- line Firesafe Council, and Habitat for Humanity prepared the way for the
certification by clearing brush this past fall. The volunteers and certifi- cation process was led by Ian Ashby, Highway 180 Fire Defense Program Manager with the Sierra Resource Conservation District.
The Oak to Timberline Fire Safe Council hopes to expand the program and encourage the formation of more such communities in Dunlap, Squaw Valley, and Badger.
Volunteers again will converge in Pinehurst, at the Cedarbrook cabin area, on March 24-27 to continue the prevention efforts for this season.
Contact Mahalia LoMele at from the Oak to Timberline Fire Safe Coun- cil by email at mlomele@sierrarcd. com. for information on how to par- ticipate in the program.

fun guy to be around.” A GoFundMe page has been set up by the family to help with fu- neral costs. “It is with heavy hearts that Marti- na and Ricardo Chavana announce the passing of their son, Ricardo “Ri- cardito” Chavana Jr.,” the family wrote. “The family is requesting sup- port and prayers during
