Hilda Helen
Bartel McFarlin
December 1, 1919 - December 29, 2019
Hilda celebrated her hundredth birthday on December 1 at Palm
Village with family and friends. She went home to God, peacefully in her sleep, on Sunday morning, December 29. She is preceded in death by her
mother, Anna Schroeder Schultz, father, George Bartel, her sisters, Josephine Schultz and Dora Heinrich
and brother, Dan Bartel. She is sur- vived by her three sons, James (Paulette),
Richard (Marva), Clifford (Susan), seven grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and one great, great grandson. Hilda Helen Bartel was born December 1, 1919, in Chinook, Montana. She moved to Reedley when she was one year old and attended elementary and high school in Reedley. She met Lowell James McFarlin at a dance in Orosi and on Valentine’s Day, 1937, they got engaged. They married on January 16, 1938. Her rst son, James, was born in 1939 and Richard was born in 1941. They moved to Port Hueneme where Lowell was a longshoreman. They bought a farm in Orosi and moved back in 1945 where she worked alongside her hus- band and children in all aspects of their farm. Their youngest son, Clifford, was born in 1947. They raised cotton, tomatoes, squash, melons and nally switched to oranges. Hilda was in charge of the orange nursery (which had been planted from seed) for the new orchards. They built their current home in 1965 replacing the original house on the property. They did some traveling, (Spain, Scotland, New Zealand and Germany) and purchased the cabin
at Hume Lake from Lowell’s mother in the late 1950’s. She has enjoyed her time at the cabin with family and friends for over 60 years, including this past summer before she moved into assisted living at Palm Village in late August. She wrote a biography, “The Life God Gave Me,“ published in November, 2014.
She was a loyal member, Sunday school teacher and elder of the Presbyterian Church, a member of the Eastern Star, where she was Worthy Matron several times, and belonged to the Orosi Garden Club, winning many ower arranging awards. She loved her ower garden and spent hours picking and arranging owers for her home, but most happy when with family and friends.
Her memorial service was held January 3, 2020, at 10 am, at Palm Village Chapel in Reedley. Any memorial donations can be made to Hume Lake Christian Camp, Alzheimer Association or charity of your choice.
Thanks to
earning the FFA Star San Joaquin State Farmer degree, with a project of 20 head of Hereford cows. He was awarded FFA’s highest honor, being the recipient of the American Farmer Degree.
Immediately after graduating from Reedley High School, he was inducted into the Army in World War II and sent to Korea. After his discharge he continued his education, majoring in Animal Science at Reedley College and graduating from Fresno State College. In 1949, he then purchased a 110 acre ranch on the west end of Mt. Campbell, which is still the home place today.
He joined the Fresno County Cattleman’s Association in 1949, served as Secretary/Treasurer of the group and went on to be President from 1958 to 1960. He was a State Director to the California Cattlemen’s Association and a Charter member of the National Cattlemen’s Association. In 1992 he was named “Cattleman of the Year” by the Fresno- Kings County Cattlemen. He was the Livestock Chairman for the Fresno County Farm Bureau, and also a member of the American Hereford Association.
In 1955, he married Shirley Tombs of Clovis. Their common interests in riding horses, going on high Sierra Pack Trips, and both being from country backgrounds was a match that lasted for 64 years. They had two sons; Dan who lives in the Sanger area and Bruce who makes his home in Oregon. The Jennings Ranch has always been a family operation with everyone working toward the goal of raising high quality cattle. As a result, it was a tour site for many Animal Science majors of both Reedley College and Fresno State, when they studied cow/calf operations. The ranch has also hosted livestock tours from as far away as Australia.
During the last 10 years of his life he dealt with Parkinson’s disease. He showed great determination in his battle with it. He is survived by his wife Shirley; son Dan and his wife Donna; and son Bruce. As Jess was always a quiet and private person, he requested there not be any services held.
The family wishes to thank Home Instead Senior Care and Sojourn Hospice Care.
