CVP water allocations now 70 percent to south of Delta ag
Staff Report
Agricultural water service con- tractors in the Central Valley, south of the San Joaquin Delta, saw their Central Valley Project water alloca- tions from the Bureau of Reclama- tion raised to 70 percent of their contracted total in the latest update on May 22.
Although California’s Sierra snow- pack totals remain at 150 percent of
average, the allocation remained still well below full status for the con- tracted agricultural water services for many Central Valley locations. The figures don’t affect the Reedley area, where water allocations come from Pine Flat Reservoir through the Kings River Water Association.
Also, Class I contractors (an ini- tial 800,000 acre feet of available water) through the Central Valley Project’s Friant Division already are
at 100 percent allocation, and Class II contractors (surplus available wa- ter up to 1.4 million acre feet) now have uncontrolled season deliveries through Friday, June 14.
That’s still not enough for Rep. TJ Cox (D-Fresno) of the 20th Con- gressional district, which includes much of Fresno County including areas just west of Reedley,
“While [the increased allocation] is a step in the right direction – I still
believe [the Bureau of Reclamation] needs to be doing more, given the high level of precipitation we had this year,” Cox said. “The bureau must explain why we are not yet at 100 percent of the requested alloca- tion for our South-of-Delta contrac- tors – and we must continue to work together to figure out a long-term plan to address our Valley’s water needs.”
Bureau of Reclamation officials
claim they have had ongoing chal- lenges in providing higher alloca- tions for South-of-Delta water ser- vice contractors in recent decades, in part due to regulatory restrictions. They say that even in above average water years, threatened and endan- gered species’ requirements, stor- age limitations and lost conveyance capacity from land subsidence pose challenges on Reclamation’s ability to export water south of the Delta.

A miniature cannon fired off a blank round following a brief Me- morial Day ceremony at the Vietnam veterans memorial in front of the police station on May 27. About a dozen people attended the brief ceremony, including guest speaker Vernon Schmidt from the earlier Memorial Day ceremony at Reedley Cemetery.

“He had a terrible time surviving, but he survived,” Schmidt said. “He became a local businessman, because the mayor of Reedley (1964 to 1966) at one time. A great guy, good friend of mine.”
Schmidt also mentioned other familiar veterans who were POWs: Jess Preheim. Morris Jones, Earl Miles and Vernon’s brother, Glenn Schmidt, who died last year. They were names that drew familiar responses from the audience.
“These are all local people that I know and maybe you know,” he said. “These people
never knew from day to day once they were in enemy hands would they every be able to see mom or dad or any loved one again. You never knew from one day to the next if you were going to be alive.”
Schmidt also shared about a visit he and his son made to the Czech Republic in 2015, where survivors and descen- dants shared their apprecia- tion for their American “lib- erators.” He also expressed thanks for his life after the war, where he was married for 68 years to his wife, Don- na. He since has remarried to his current wife, Vi, who had Donna as a bridesmaid in her first wedding.
“We are blessed,” he said. “I trust Memorial Day has a real meaning for you today.

Members of the Reedley High School Navy Junior ROTC presented the colors of the United States and California flags as well as flags representing the branches of the military.
We live in a great country, and I’m grateful that God has blessed me and my family. I’ve gone back eight times to Europe, and I plan to go again next year. Ninety-three years old and still going strong. Love this country.”
Once again, various groups and organizations placed wreaths of remem- brance at the grave of the unknown soldier at Reedley
Cemetery. “Echo Taps” was performed by trumpet players Chris Lopez and Reese Kubo with the Reedley High School jazz band.
