but I was afraid that some- one might get hurt because I couldn’t do my job so I retired,” he said. Realizing he couldn’t live on his retirement, and five years ago he began his higher education after his daughter graduated from college.
Yammilette “Yami” Ro- driguez was honored with the Distinguished Alumna Award. After moving to Dinuba from the Bay Area in 1988, she earned an associate’s degree from the college followed by a bachelor’s degree in business administration and market- ing at Fresno State and then a master’s degree in leadership and organizational studies at Fresno Pacific University.
That paved the way for Rodriguez to become the se- nior director of the Youth Leadership Institute in the Central Valley; a post she has served in since 2009. She cred- its her initial higher education at RC for her position today.
“It is an honor to be here. I owe a lot to Reedley College,” Rodriguez said. “It was an in- credible experience when I attended in the mid-90s.”
Rodriguez also credited her father, who drove her from Dinuba to Reedley when she started college.
“I think it’s so crucial to honor those stories before us,” she said. “Because of my im- migrant parents, and the sac- rifice that they made, I stand here before you. Because of the incredible work that they did to make sure that their daughters had an opportunity, I stand here before you.”
Also, three area high schools had dual-enrollment students graduate during the RC ceremony. Reedley Middle

Staff Report
It was hardly summer-like weather, but that didn’t stop a handful of children from run- ning through the chilly water during the May 22 dedication of the Luke Trimble Splash Park facility.
City leaders and commu- nity members gathered at the park – once the site of the Luke Trimble Memorial Pool – for a ribbon cutting and offi- cially start of operation of the splash pad.
“I don’t get excited very often. But I do when I see something taking place that’s going to benefit our children, our youth, and give them something that will steer them away from possible negative activities,” Mayor Frank Pi- non said in his speech before cutting the ceremonial ribbon.
Sarah Reid, community services director for the city, gave a brief history about the late Luke Trimble, who gave lessons at the original pool that was built in 1931. The pool was renamed in his memory in 1984, but later fell into disrepair and was closed in 2012.
Ken Zech of the Reed- ley Historical Society shared his memories of Trimble in a brief speech. He told about meeting Trimble “many years ago” when Zech was 7 or 8 years old. Instructors worked with students teaching them to swim, and Trimble was in charge of the lessons.
“He stood tall, tanned to a deep bronze wearing large white boxer-type swim trunks and a whistle around
his neck,” Zech said. “Luke Trimble was of the conviction that anyone could learn how to swim. More to the point, everyone should learn how to swim. Reedley was a place where there were many wa- terways and lakes and this was a recipe of drowning if you didn’t know how to swim.”
The new splash park was funded by state grant money and built by Steve Dovali Con-

struction. It features a new restroom facility, green areas and tables for picnicking.
“We have this beautiful new amenity that will provide opportunities for children to play in water without being in the river,” said Nicole Zieba, city manager.
The splash pad facility will be open daily once the weather warms, and operate through the summer.
