Eagles boys hoops throttle Kingsburg

After racing out to a 21-3 lead after the first quarter, the Immanuel High Eagles boys basketball team rolled to a 86-43 victory on Jan. 23 over the Kingsburg High School Vikings.
The Eagles then defeated Central Valley Christian High School 63-51 on Jan. 25 in Visalia.
As of Jan. 30, Immanuel was 11-9 overall and 4-1 in the Central Sequoia League and one game behind Selma High.
On Jan. 23, Nate Kendricks led the Eagles with 30 points.
Kaleb Daglish had 12 points, while Jordan Rodriguez scored 10.
“I was really proud of the way the team played,” said Chris Woods, Immanuel High Eagles head coach. “We were able to add things to our de- fense as the game was going and the guys did a great job of executing.”
After the Eagles took a
46-16 lead into halftime, they were never challenged in the second half.
All 10 players scored for Immanuel High.
“It was great to see every- one get in the game and be in- volved,” Woods said. “I think it really shows our depth and that we don't lose a step when we start to substitute players.”
Coach Woods said he thinks the addition of Rodri- guez and Daglish over the past four games has helped.
“Jordan has added a level of speed and pace that we love to play at,” Woods said. “Ka- leb and Gavin [Lloyd] comple- ment each other well because mostteamsdon'thavetwobig guys to guard them.”
No statistics were avail- able for the Eagles' win over CVC.
The Eagles played Selma High School on Wednesday, Jan. 31, in Selma.

The Reedley High Pi- rates boys wrestling team retained possession of the Superintendent's Award after defeating the Orange Cove Titans 39-18 at the Manning Melee.
The Pirates won six of the eight matches contest- ed on Jan. 26 to secure the victory.
Meanwhile, the Reed- ley High girls wrestling team defeated Orange Cove 36-21 to win their first Superintendent's Award in the four years of competition between the girls teams.
The dual took place in front of a packed gym of cheerleaders, students and parents at Reedley High School.
Girls wrestling took center stage to begin the night. Orange Cove's Jack- ie Gonzalez defeated Reed- ley High's Lucero Cedeno 4-3 in sudden death in the 145-pound match to give the Titans the first match win of the night.

The Reedley College Ti- gers softball team opened their 2018 season in dominant fashion including a no-hitter.
The Tigers won two games against the Gavilan College Rams on Jan. 26 at Reedley College.
RC won the first game 9-0 and the second game 10-0. Each game ended after five innings because of the eight- run lead rule.

Locals look to contribute to Fresno Pacific baseball

When the Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds baseball team start the season on Feb. 2 at Chico State, two players with Reedley ties will take the field with hopes of leading the Sunbirds to victories.
Michael Warkentin, for- mer Reedley High standout, and Esteban Lizaola, former Immanuel High standout, will play prominent roles for a team vying for a conference title.
Both are sophomores but with different expectations for the 2018 season.
Warkentin is coming off a freshman season in which he was FPU's leadoff hitter and led the team with a .333 bat- ting average.
He made 39 starts in 2017 and was third on the team in
both runs scored with 37 and hits with 51.
Warketnin enters his sophomore season hoping to continue his strong play.
“Confidence is huge at this level. You have to know that you can play at this level to succeed.” Warkentin said. “I gained a lot last season and this season I hope to just con- tinue to have fun with this team.”
Warkentin will bat leadoff again this season for the Sun- birds.
“I tried to put on some muscle and work on my speed during the off-season,” Warkentin said. “I try to see as many pitches I can and get on base anyway I can.”
