continue to get better in 2018. “Michael is special. We saw that right away,” Hirsch- korn said. “The way he plays is so mature. He is a speed leadoff type guy and played to that from the get-go. The more confident he got, the better he played and knew that he could do it. He played fearlessly and
it was fun to watch.” Warkentin, in 2017, was
named to the All-PacWest Third Team and also was a Academic All-PacWest selec- tion.
Hirschkorn said that Warkentin he is happy that he found a player to lead off the lineup.
“Michael is a true leadoff hitter. He understands how to take a pitches,” Hirschkorn said. “He has a great work ethic and is only going to get better.”
Lizaola is in his first sea- son with Fresno Pacific Uni- versity after playing his fresh- man season at Cal State San Bernardino.
It was there that Lizaola said he learned what playing in college is like.
“I learned not to become content. I felt like I was the man coming out of high school
because I did really well,” Lizaola said. “I went to San Bernardino thinking I was go- ing to do the same thing but you have to put extra work in if you want to become better. I won't be content and just push myself.”
Lizaola said that coming back to FPU was the right fit for him.
“I love the team and the school, and the atmosphere here is great,” Lizaola said. “I feel like I am progressing as a player and a person. I feel like that is the most important thing.”
Coach Hirschkorn said he believes that Lizaola could have a breakout season.
“The jumps that he has made since high school are amazing,” Hirschkorn said. “His velocity is around the 90 mile per hour mark. His sec- ondary pitches are pro level. The sky is the limit with him.”
Coach Hirshkorn also likes the ability of Lizaola to do the little things.
“He is very athletic on the mound and he can defend his position, and now he is just working on polishing every- thing that he's got,” Hirsch- korn said. “We are really hap- py that we were able to get him to come to FPU.”
