COVID-19
update
As of 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, there had been 1,287 confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Fresno County, with 17 deaths.
A solitary swimmer tested the waters of Avocado Lake near Sanger on May 15. Fresno Coun- ty reopened its parks to the public on May 11. On this day, pop-up canopies, fold-up chairs and family picnics could be seen along the shores of the lake while some park patrons even took to trying their luck while fishing on small boats. That same day, the Fresno County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Unit performed a variety of search and rescue drills.

He also advised peo- ple looking to hit the riv- ers and lakes to remem- ber that safety comes first.
“If you don’t know how to swim, don’t swim,” Buenrostro cau- tioned.
He also advised those who do know how to swim to still take prop- er precautions by using flotation devices. But his sternest warning was against swimming after drinking.
He warned, “They could be good swim- mers, but once you start drinking it’s a bad mix. It’s like drinking and driving.”
Buenrostro hopes that with the parks re- opening people will take proper precautions to avoid possible trage- dies.
“That’s why we’re out here, to prepare for the worst,” said Buenrostro. “Every year there’s at least one (drowning)."

The diver on the blue line is responsible for following the yellow line as fast as he can to retrieve his diving part- ner.
The process, depend-
ing on the water’s clarity, can be more challenging than it looks. During the team’s first attempts, at a depth of about 25 feet, Buenrostro said the vis- ibility can be anywhere from two to three feet. But that number quick- ly diminishes in deeper water.
