EMPERORS Continued from B1 best of his two carries, taking one 27 yards to paydirt in the second quarter as he powered through defenders to give Dinuba a two-score lead. Despite being down eight of its starters due to injuries, including Di- nuba’s center, Magaña turned in a solid perfor- mance, going 15 of 20 for 204 yards. His one touch- down pass came with just over a minute left in the first half, when he con- nected from 3-yards out with Dinuba’s No. 3 Cam- eron Amador. Taking a 27-7 lead into the half, the Emperors looked like the team Di- nuba has grown to love. Their offense was mov- ing the ball, their defense was making plays. Play- ers were stepping up. By game’s end, the Emperors walked away with a 41-13 victory, 316 yards of total offense and perhaps a new-found confidence going into the thick of the season. Get- ting their running game going should pay divi- dends for Dinuba. With Mendoza’s 8-yard run touchdown run in the third quarter, helping to give his team a 34-7 lead, the Emperors were back in business as contenders in the Central Sequoia League. Throw in a 48-yard punt return by Dinuba High senior Brian Camp- Rick Curiel / Mid Valley Times Dinuba High's defense also held strong in the trenches, preventing the Pirates from sustaining any long drives in their matchup Sept. 6. The Pirates added a second score late in the third quarter as they once again took advantage of a Dinuba special team’s mishap when Emperor’s punter Jorge Duran was sacked deep in Emper- or’s territory. Aside from the two red-zone oppor- tunities handed to them, Reedley struggled on of- fense. “I think we shot our- selves in the foot,” said Reedley High head coach Tony Gates. “We weren’t executing on offense or defense. It wasn’t so much what they were doing to us, but what we were do- ing to ourselves. “Having said that, I think Dinuba’s lineback- ers are the best we’ve seen all year. They flat out came up and they were going to sit in a certain defense, and until we did something to make them not, they were going to sit there and beat us up. We couldn’t execute well enough to get perimeter plays.” Dinuba’s first victory comes on the heels of two one-score losses to open the season, a 47-42 late minute loss in its home opener with Porterville followed by a 3-point loss (28-25) to Redwood and former Emperor’s head coach Kevin Scharton. The Emperors have two more non-league games before entering CSL play. They travel to Visalia tomorrow to take on El Diamante. The Min- ers come into the match- up with an 0-3 record, hav- ing lost to Tulare Western (40-14), Tulare Union (42- 25) and last week to Paso Robles (17-14). “Every time we play El D, it’s always one of those games where it’s close,” Barajas shared. “They seem to always have one or two guys that are very athletic... It’s going to be another tough matchup.” Dinuba travels to Fresno next week to take on Edison before open- ing league play when they host Central Valley Christian on Oct. 4. Reedley High will have two consecutive home games as they host Mendota High tomorrow night. After a bye week, the Pirates will host Washington Union on Sept. 27. They then open North Yosemite League play on Oct. 4 with an away game against Roo- sevelt High.
