And Willhoite said Ortiz’s chili dogs were a big deal for the post. Sales were hot. People showed up, talked and had fun.
The chili dogs will be sold the first and third Wednesdays of the month. This month that means from 5 to 8 p.m. the dogs will be sold on Feb. 7 and 21.
But make no mistake. These are not Ortiz smoke shop dogs. These are George’s creations. And if they could tell stories like their creator, that would be something.
Anyway, that’s another tale altogether.
Willhoite said the secret’s in the chili. “You need fat for chili,” he said. “I make Texas-style. No beans. Mike put beans in his. I can’t compete with him.”

And Frank Ortiz USMC, no relation to Mike, ordered six dogs and brought along a couple of young people. Asked if he liked the new dogs, he said, “Definitely. I enjoy coming down here and BSing with the rest of the guys.”
And, yes, I had one. My schedule that day included a girls basketball game vs. Bullard High over at the Sanger High gym. And Willhoite even brought it to the table where I sat next to Viar. He offered some onions and jalapeños, which I declined.
After I finished, Willhoite asked, “How was it?”
“It was wonderful,” I said. “Thank you.”
And it was. The legend lives on.

Big Game Feed this year will be limited to 300 tickets. Last year, the event reached capacity with more than 400 people consuming about 500 pounds of wild game, said organizer Ron Stukey with the Sanger Bible Church. Former Sanger mayor Rene Gonzalez attended the festivities and agreed that the new building was a needed addition to Sanger’s aging downtown core. Bank of the Sierra opened next door and the American Legion gave life to another empty building across Seventh Street. Businesses have been opening along the route, and the chamber’s efforts to bring people downtown
have been paying off. Rene Gonzalez did point out that it may be the second elevator in town, after the one at Washington
Academic Middle School. Fresno’s violin virtuoso Patrick Contreras performed as did the Sanger High Chamber
Singers.

Feb. 17 for a total of five sessions for five weeks. Each session features fundamental drills for 20 minutes, and then participants play in games the next 40 minutes.
