Helping Reduce Falls in Seniors
New Fall Screening Program at Motion Matters Physical Therapy is making a world of difference.
Are you at risk?
Motion Matters Physical Therapy is passionate about preventive health. A major health problem for older adults is loss of balance and falling. In the United States, one of every three people 65 years and older falls each year. Of those who fall, 20-30% suffer moderate to se- vere injuries that reduce mobility and independence, and increase the risk of premature death. Some of these falls can be prevented. It is imperative that you or your loved one get tested before a fall occurs.
What can be done?
Fall risk screening is being hosted by Motion Matters Physical Therapy on dates in January and February. The screening takes 15-30 minutes to complete and will oc- cur with a licensed Physical Therapist. During testing various balance and leg strength tests are performed. Testing includes use of the Biodex Balance System SD.
It takes just a few minutes
The Biodex Balance System, consisting of a comput- erized platform and touch-screen control panel, mea- sures a patient’s ability to maintain balance. Results are
compared to stored averages of other healthy adults in your age and gender category. From these calculations a “risk factor” can be determined. This “risk factor” al- lows the clinician to assess fall risk, and suggest a plan of action. In the event that the participant is found to be at risk, an array of interventions and exercises to regain balance and reduce risk of falling can be recommended.
Possible treatment?
Balance and Falls often occur due to impairments in multiple systems including muscular, visual, vestibular and proprioceptive. Physical therapists at the clinic have a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree with ad- vanced training to be able to assess and treat these con- ditions. For those identi ed at risk of falling Physical Therapy treatment may be a life-saving intervention. Physical Therapy involves a more detailed evaluation and treatment with a Doctor of Physical Therapy which can be initiated at the clinic.
Motion Matters Physical Therapy, an outpatient or- thopedic clinic is proud to be part of the Sanger commu- nity.
